Ezra Edgerton was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on January 17, 1752, the son of William and Lydia (Barstow) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the Franklin Congregational Church on May 6th of the same year.

Ezra Edgerton was listed as a private in Captain Jedediah Huntington’s First Company, which was “Raised by order of the Assembly at the July session, 1775”.  The company was recruited largely from Norwich and the surrounding towns of New London County, Connecticut.  According to the company roster, Ezra Edgerton enlisted on July 17th (1775) and was discharged on December 16th (1775).  The company was initially stationed on Long Island Sound, and was subsequently ordered to Roxbury, Massachusetts to join with Gen. Spencer’s Brigade.

Ezra Edgerton was married in Franklin, Connecticut on January 21, 1787 to Anne Edgerton.  Anne’s parentage has not been conclusively established.  Some secondary sources have listed her surname as either “Tracy” or “unknown”; however, both the marriage record at the Franklin Congregational Church (ChR 1:384) and the civic marriage record at Franklin (VR 1:7) clearly list her name as “Anne Edgerton”.  According to the age at death reported on her gravestone, Mrs. Ezra Edgerton was born circa 1750 or 1751.  The only known Anne Edgerton who would fit these dates would be Ezra’s first cousin, Anne Edgerton, daughter of Joshua and Ruth (Kingsbury) Edgerton, who was born in Norwich on November 28, 1850.  The last known reference to this daughter is in the will of her father, Joshua Edgerton, dated (June 25, 1776), where his “only daughter Anne” was granted “the liberty and priviledge of living in the east lower room in my dwelling house and a priviledge in the well of water near the house and also the priviledge of keeping her necessary household goods in said room, all so long as she shall remain single and unmarried.”  There is no death record or burial site for this daughter in Norwich or Franklin; so it seems likely that she was indeed the Anne Edgerton who married Ezra.

Ezra Edgerton moved to Randolph, Orange County, Vermont shortly after his marriage.  His elder brother, Asa, had been one of the original settlers of Randolph just a few years previously and was one of the prominent members of the new community.  Ezra was listed as a head of household in the 1790 Federal Census of Randolph, at which time his household was enumerated with the following individuals:

3 males “of 16 years and upwards”  (Ezra and ?);

1 female  (wife Anne).

The Federal Census of 1800 indicates a family of three children (two sons and one daughter) for Ezra and Anne Edgerton, but none of their children have been yet identified..  The enumeration of Ezra’s household (in Randolph, Orange County, Vermont) was as follows:

1 male “of 45 and upwards”  (Ezra);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son ?);

1 male “under 10 years”  (son ?);

1 female “of 45 and upwards”  (wife Anne); and,

1 female “under 10 years”  (daughter ?).

The Latter Day Saints’ International Genealogical Index references an “Asa Edgerton, son of Ezra and Mrs. Anna Edgerton”, born in Randolph circa 1785, but this has not been corroborated by any primary sources, nor is there any further account of this supposed son.

Ezra Edgerton died at Randolph, Vermont on February 6, 1802.  His death was recorded in the Old Town Records of Randolph (A:98).  Ezra was buried at the Randolph Center Cemetery, where his headstone reads:  “In memory of / Mr. EZRA EDGERTON / who departed this life 6 February 1802 / aged 50 years / son of Mr. Wm & Mrs. Lydia / Edgerton, Connecticut.”  Ezra’s widow, Anne, was remarried on October 9, 1803 at Randolph, Vermont to Deacon Isaac Palmer (VR A:111).  She died at Randolph on March 1, 1819, and was buried beside her first husband at the Randolph Center Cemetery.  The inscription on her headstone reads:  “In / memory of / ANNE wife of / EZRA / EDGERTON / also wife of Deacon / ISAAC PALMER / died March the 1st / 1819 / aged 68 years.”
