Frank Edgerton, “aged 18, of Fremont, Ohio”, enlisted on January 14, 1864 for service in the Union Army.  He served as a private in the 72nd Ohio Infantry Regiment (Company C), which fought at battles throughout Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama.  Frank’s cousin, Rollin Augustus Edgerton had enlisted in 1861 and also fought in the 72nd Regiment (Co. S and Co. E).  Frank Edgerton was mustered out at Vicksburg, Mississippi on September 11, 1865 (see Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio, 1886).

 

The household of “Frank Egerton” was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Lindsey (Washington Township), Sandusky County, Ohio (pg. 260; family #9; dwelling #10; enum. June 1, 1880), as follows:

Frank Edgerton applied for a Civil War Invalid Pension on July 16, 1888.  The application was filed from the state of Minnesota and cited Frank’s service in the 72nd Ohio Infantry, Company C (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #664349, Certificate #460625).

According to the above census record, Susan was the mother of seven children, six of whom were still living.  Frank’s occupation was listed as “painter and paper hanger”, Roy was listed as a “day laborer”, Fred was listed as a “queler”, and the three younger children were noted as “at school”.  At the time of this census, Frank and Susan’s eldest son, Frank Jr., was residing in his father’s hometown of Fremont, Ohio.  He was enumerated in the 1900 Federal Census of Fremont (Ward 2), Sandusky County, Ohio (dwelling # 241; family #256; enum. June 7, 1900) as “Frank Edgerton, day laborer, aged 29, b. January 1871, Indiana (father and mother both born in Ohio)”.

According to the above census record, Susan was the mother of seven children, six of whom were still living.  Frank’s occupation was listed as “painter – house”.

 

Frank and Susan (Adams) Edgerton are buried adjacent to each other at Fort Hill Cemetery in Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee.  The footstones which mark their burial sites are inscribed with the following epitaphs:
