Franklin Edgerton was born at Cazenovia, New York
on April 26, 1813, the second son and fourth child of Amos and Zerviah
(Graham) Edgerton. Franklin was raised
in Cazenovia. His father died when
Franklin was ten years old, after which his mother, Zerviah, removed with the
children to Phelps, New York. Franklin
made his living principally as a carpenter. Franklin Edgerton was married to Adeline Amelia
Danielson, daughter of Frederick and Fanny (Huntington) Danielson of
Phelps. No record of the marriage has
yet been located, but it is presumed that the marriage took place circa
1838-39 in Phelps, New York. Franklin
and Adeline resided initially in Phelps, where their six children were born –
five sons, Sidney H, George H., Franklin, William and Charles Frederick; and
one daughter, Helen A. The household of Franklin Edgerton was recorded in
the 1840 Federal
Census of Phelps, 3 males “20 and under 30” (Franklin and brothers, Junius and Volney); 1 male “15 and under 20” (brother Sidney); and, 1 female “20 and under 30” (wife Adeline). “Franklin Edgerton, Phelps” was recorded as a
Petit Juror on the “List of Grand Jurors - Drawn the 22 January, 1848, to
serve at the Court of Oyer and Terminer, to be held at the Court House, in
Canandaigua, in and for Ontario County, on the second Monday in February
next” (see Geneva Courier, February

Census of Phelps,
In the fall of 1854, Franklin Edgerton moved west
with his family, settling in the city of Marshall, Calhoun County,
Michigan. He resided there for the
remainder of his life. For many years,
he operated a contracting business in partnership with his two elder sons,
Sidney and George, under the name “F. Edgerton and Co.”. The following entries are found in the 1882 Marshall City Directory (A. G.
Needham & Co.; 1884), as follows: “Edgerton, F. & Co. (Franklin, George, and Sidney Edgerton), contractors, builders, sash, door and blind mnfrs, planing mill, and lumber dealers, Jefferson nr Hart.” “Edgerton, Franklin (F. Edgerton & Co.), res 12 N. Eagle.” “Edgerton, George (F. Edgerton & Co.), bds 12 N. Eagle.” “Edgerton, Sidney (F. Edgerton & Co.), bds 12 N. Eagle.” “Edgerton, Charles, carpenter F. The following obituary for Mrs. Adeline Amelia
(Danielson) Edgerton was published in The
Marshall Statesman on Friday, September 2, 1887. “Mrs. Franklin Edgerton Born Phelps, N.Y., December 6, 1820, died Marshall, Michigan, August 31, 1887 in the afternoon of the last day of summer she died – a fitting day, a fitting hour for one whole summer of life had passed, but had forgotten to take with it old-time beauty and brightness. As sad as the close of the summer which had brought as much joy as happiness, as peacefully yet suddenly as it seemed to leave us, so peacefully yet suddenly came the end at last.” The following obituary for Franklin Edgerton was
published in The Daily Chronicle
(Marshall, Michigan) on Monday, September 17, 1888: “The funeral of Franklin Edgerton whose death occurred from apoplexy on Friday, September 14, 1888 was held from his residence at 3:30 yesterday afternoon and was attended by a large number of his friends in spite of the inclemency of the weather. Franklin Edgerton was born in Hamilton, Madison co. N.Y. April 26, 1813. When a young man he removed to Phelps, Ontario county, New York. There he was united in marriage to Miss Adeline Donaldson of that town. Mr. and Mrs. Edgerton came to this city in the fall of 1854. Franklin Edgerton conducted the business of contracting and building and in 1872 purchased the panel, sash and blind factory which [----] on the site with the present casket factory. He improved the plant very much and continued in that business until about 5 years ago, when he turned over the affairs of the institution to his sons. Since then he has not been actively engaged in business. On August 31, 1887, Mrs. Edgerton passed away and her death brought sorrow to [----]. Three sons and one daughter are left to mourn the loss of a kind father, Sidney, George, Charles and Helen. Franklin Edgerton was a man of strong worth, one who was admired and respected by all who knew him and he left behind him many warm friends who regret that he could not longer remain among them.” A similar obituary was
