Franklin Phelps Edgerton attended Syracuse University.  The following entry appears in the Alumni Record and General Catalogue of Syracuse University (Syracuse, New York: Alumni Assoc. of Syracuse Univ.; May 1899, pg. 267):

 

“FRANK PHELPS EDGERTON.  Born at Orleans, N. Y.  Student from Phelps, N. Y., 1866-9. B.S.  Engaged in farming near Clifton Springs, N. Y., since 1869. A soldier in the civil war from August 1862 to the close of the war.  Residence, Clifton Springs, N. Y.”

 

Franklin P. Edgerton, “aged 18”, enlisted on August 6, 1862 at Phelps, New York.  He served as a private in F Company, 126th New York Infantry Regiment.  The 126th Regiment was active from September 1862 through April 1865 in numerous battles in Pennsylvania and Virginia, including the historic battles at Harper’s Ferry (Sept. 15, 1862) and Gettysburg (July 2-4, 1862).   Franklin Edgerton was transferred from Company F to Company D on December 25, 1864; and was mustered out at Alexandria, Virginia on  June 3, 1865 (see  New York: Report of the Adjutant-General).

 

The following summary of Franklin’s Civil War service was published in The Adventures of 1000 Boys in Blue, Adventures of Those Who Served in the 126th Regiment (Arabella M. Willson; 1870):

 

“Franklin P. Egerton [sic] was born in Ontario county, New York, and was a farmer by occupation; he enlisted August 7th, 1862, aged nineteen years, and participated in the battles of Harper's Ferry, Auburn Ford, Bristow Station, Mine Run, Morton's Ford and the Wilderness; he was wounded in action in the battle of the Wilderness May 6th, 1864; subsequently rejoined the Regiment, and was detached with provost guard at Head-quarters 2d Army Corps, serving in that capacity until the close of the war, when he was discharged with the Regiment.” 

 

Franklin P. Edgerton applied for a Civil War Pension on November 10, 1904, citing his service in the New York Militia.  The application was filed from New York State with “R. Shoppell” as attorney (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #1321678, Certificate #1105333).

 

The household of “Frank B. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Hopewell, Ontario County, New York (pg. 24; dwelling #13; family #14; enum. June 2, 1900), as follows:
