George Dexter Edgerton was born at Dayton, New York circa 1852.  He was the second son of Hiram Edgerton and his second wife, Mary Ann Judd.  George was raised in Dayton and Nashville, New York.  His name is found in most records as “George D. Edgerton”; the only known reference to his complete name is from the record of his second marriage.

Upon the death of his father in 1871, George was the principal heir to the family farm in Hanover Township.  In 1879, George joined with his younger brother “Edmund A. Edgerton” and his mother “Mary Anne Edgerton” in a deed conveying 40 acres of this property to Caroline M. Grantier.  The remaining 100 acres of the farm are found listed on the 1881 Atlas of Chautauqua County as the farm of “G. Edgarton”.  Both George and Edmund had already removed west by this time, so it is uncertain if any of the family were residing on the property at this time.

George D. Edgerton was married twice.  His first wife, Elma P., died October 3, 1876, “aged 22 years and 9 months” and was buried at the Nasvhille Cemetery in Hanover Township, New York.  Not long afterwards, George removed west to LaSalle County, Illinois, in the northern portion of that state west of Chicago.  He settled in the city of Earlville, where his elder brother, Daniel, also resided briefly during the latter 1870’s.

At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, George was recorded in the household of Mrs. Almira Hathaway (pg. 171; dwelling #315; family #318; enum. June 25-26, 1880).  He was enumerated as, “George Edgerton, aged 27, boarder, clerk in store, b. in New York (both parents b. in New York)”.  Later that year, George married Almira’s daughter, Emma, who was also recorded in the household.

George Dexter Edgerton was married at Earlville, Illinois on September 8, 1880 to Emma J. Hathaway, daughter of Lorenzo and Almira (Cain) Hathaway, formerly of Cheshire, Massachusetts.  Emma was born at Chesire on March 9, 1862.  George and Emma’s marriage was recorded in the LaSalle County Register of Marriages (Vol. 1, pg. 120, #1560).

George and Emma had two children:  a son Roy R., born May 1884 and a daughter, Ruth, born October 9, 1892 – both born at Earlville.

George Dexter Edgerton died at Earlville, Illinois sometime before June 1900.  The year and date of his death have not yet been found.  The Historical and Biographical History of the Township of Dayton… (published in 1901) states that George “died a few years ago at Earlville, Ill”.

The household of Mrs. Emma J. Edgerton was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Earlville City, Ward 2 (Earl Township), LaSalle County, Illinois (pg. 263; dwelling #133; family #138; enum. June 6, 1900), as follows:
