George Hough Edgerton was
born at Pawlet, Vermont on May 31, 1809, the son of Jacob
Edgerton and his second wife, Hannah Sheldon.
He was presumably named in memory of his deceased brother, George H., who
died in 1807 at three years of age.
George grew up in
Pawlet. He was married at Bennington, Vermont on
April 26, 1841 to Amanda Hall Lasell, daughter of James and Phebe Lasell, who
had come to Bennington, Vermont
from Providence, Rhode Island. Amanda was born at Providence on April 28, 1817.
George and Amanda resided
initially in Pawlet, later removing circa 1847 to the village of Wallingford, just a short distance north in Rutland
County, Vermont. They had three children
– Amelia L., born at Pawlet on January 25, 1842; Charles M., born at Pawlet
on May 22, 1843; and Ada Lasell, born at Wallingford on October 30,
1857. The elder daughter, Amelia, died
in Pawlet, Vermont
on June 16, 1847 (Pawlet VR I:107) and was buried in the family plot at Green Hill
Cemetery in Wallingford
Village.

At the outbreak of the Civil
War, George’s only son, Charles M., enlisted in the 10th regiment of the Vermont
Volunteer Infantry from Wallingford. He was promoted to the rank of
Lieutenant. Charles died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
on March 28, 1864, as the result of injuries in battle, and his body was
brought home to Wallingford for interment in
the family plot at Green
Hill Cemetery. The inscription on Charles’ gravestone
records his dates as: “May 22, 1843 –
March 28, 1864”.
George worked for many years
as a shoemaker, in Pawlet and Wallingford. He later opened a drugstore in Wallingford Village in 1865. The store and residence of “G. H. Edgerton”
are listed on the 1869 F.W. Beers’ Rutland County Atlas Map of
Wallingford, located on the west side of Main Street, between Depot St. and
Elm St. (then named Mill St.), and just adjacent to the current Klock
residence.
