George Linus Edgerton was born at Bennington, Vermont in the year 1836, the only son of Plinny and Nancy (Haynes) Edgerton.  He was raised in Bennington and made his living as a carpenter and millwright.

Very little is known about the life of George L. Edgerton.  In the mid 1860’s, he settled in the town of New Lots, in Kings County, New York, where he was married to Emma M. ---- and had one son, Charles H.  Census records are not consistent regarding the ages of Charles and Emma.

The household of George Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of New Lots, Kings County, New York (pg. 207; dwelling #835; family #1155; enum. July 9, 1870), as follows:

George’s whereabouts at the time of the 1880 Federal Census is not known.  He is not found either in Kings County, New York, nor in his hometown of Bennington, Vermont.  George’s only son, Charles, was recorded living with his grandmother, Nancy Edgerton, in Bennington.

George Linus Edgerton died at Bennington, Vermont in August of 1882.  According to the record of his death (Bennington VR 3:51), he was a carpenter, aged 46 years, single [sic], and had been born in Bennington, the son of Pliny Edgerton and Nancy Haynes.  George’s name was written in the register as “Linus Edgerton”, and the cause of death was given as “consumption”.  George L. Edgerton was buried in the family plot at Hinsdillville Cemetery, in North Bennington, Vermont.

George’s widow, “Emma M. Edgerton”, was remarried at Hartford, Connecticut on August 28, 1895 to John C. Moore.  According to the marriage record (Hartford VR M2:402), Emma was a widow, aged 45, born in New York; and John was aged 46, born in Glastonbury, Connecticut.  The family was enumerated in the 1900 Federal Census of Hartford (Ward 5), Hartford County, New York (dwelling #93; family #304; enum. June 1900), as follows:
