The following obituary for Mrs. Georgia Claire (Edgerton) McDowell was published in the Quad City Times on Tuesday, September 23, 1997

 

“ROCK ISLAND — Services for Clare E. McDowell, 87, of 3910 12th St., will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Rock Island.  The Rev. Tom Neufer Emswiler will officiate. There is no visitation. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.

 

Mrs. McDowell died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley, Ill.

 

Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements.

 

She was employed as a teacher at Thomas Jefferson School, Milan, Ill., for 20 years, retiring in 1975.

 

Clare Edgerton was born March 22, 1910, in Truman, Ark., to Lorenzo Dow and Georgia May Edgerton.  She married Everett B. McDowell on April 25, 1936, in Caruthersville, Mo.  He died Sept. 3, 1983.

 

She received a bachelor's degree in 1969 from Augustana College, Rock Island.

 

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

 

She enjoyed nature, flower gardening, reading and writing poetry.

 

Memorials may be made to Thomas Jefferson School, Milan.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Lila McDowell, Rock Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Everett E. and Sally McDowell, Lakewood, Colo.; grandchildren, Alexis McKnight, and Meghan and Scott McDowell; a sister, Rennie Edgerton, Rock Island; and a nephew, Dow Edgerton, Davenport.”
