Giles Edgerton was born at Randolph, Vermont on February 14, 1796, the son of William and Hannah (Blodgett) Edgerton.  He was raised in Randolph and made his living as a farmer and soldier.

On April 17, 1813, “Giles Egerton” enlisted at Randolph, Vermont for a term of one year military service in the United States Army.  He served as a private in 31st U. S. Infantry under Capt. Silas Dickinson.  According to the enlistment record, Giles was a farmer, aged 18, born at Randolph, Vermont.  At the expiration of his term, he reenlisted for service in the War of 1812 and served in the 26th U. S. Infanty Regiment under Capt. J. Levake and Capt. S. C. Cotton.  He was promoted to Sergeant in March of 1815.  Giles was discharged at Burlington, Vermont on June 15, 1815 at the expiration of his term.  In compensation for his military service, Giles was later a land Patent from the Federal Goverment on January 10, 1818, comprising 160 acres in McDonough County, Illinois.

Following the War, Giles Edgerton settled in Galway, New York, where he was married on June 14, 1817 to Abigail Starkweather, daughter of Avery and Sarah (Meech) Starkweather.  Abigail was born at Galway on June 24, 1798.  Her ancestry is well-documented in Carlton Lee Starkweather’s A Brief Genealogical History of Robert Starkweather of Roxbury and Ipswich, Massachusetts (Auburn, New York: Press of Knapp, Peck & Thomson; 1904).  Giles and Abigail (Starkweather) Edgerton had two children:  a daughter, Hannah Marion, born at Galway on February 21, 1818; and a son, William Wallace, born at Galway on December 13, 1819.

Mrs. Abigail Starkweather) Edgerton died at Gaines, New York on August 14, 1823.  She was buried at the Eagle Harbor Cemetery in Gaines, New York.  There is no further account of Giles Edgerton.  His daughter, Hannah Marion, married Matthew Morehouse and resided at Eagle Harbor, New York and Holly, Michigan.  Giles’ son, William Wallace, settled in Wayne County, New York.  He was married twice and had three children.
