Giles Edgerton, son of William and Hannah (Blodgett) Edgerton.
Abigail Starkweather, daughter of Avery and Sarah (Meech) Starkweather.

Giles
Edgerton was born at Randolph, Vermont on February 14, 1796, the son of
William and Hannah (Blodgett) Edgerton.
He was raised in Randolph and made his living as a farmer and soldier. On
April 17, 1813, “Giles Egerton” enlisted at Randolph, Vermont for a term of
one year military service in the United States Army. He served as a private in 31st U. S.
Infantry under Capt. Silas Dickinson.
According to the enlistment
record, Giles was a farmer, aged 18, born at Randolph, Vermont. At the expiration of his term, he
reenlisted for service in the War of 1812 and served in the 26th U. S.
Infanty Regiment under Capt. J. Levake and Capt. S. C. Cotton. He was promoted to Sergeant in March of
1815. Giles was discharged at
Burlington, Vermont on June 15, 1815 at the expiration of his term. In compensation for his military service,
Giles was later a land Patent
from the Federal Goverment on January 10, 1818, comprising 160 acres in
McDonough County, Illinois. Following
the War, Giles Edgerton settled in Galway, New York, where he was married on
June 14, 1817 to Abigail Starkweather, daughter of Avery and Sarah (Meech)
Starkweather. Abigail was born at
Galway on June 24, 1798. Her ancestry
is well-documented in Carlton Lee Starkweather’s A Brief Genealogical History
of Robert Starkweather of Roxbury and Ipswich, Massachusetts (Auburn,
New York: Press of Knapp, Peck & Thomson; 1904). Giles and Abigail (Starkweather) Edgerton
had two children: a daughter, Hannah
Marion, born at Galway on February 21, 1818; and a son, William Wallace, born
at Galway on December 13, 1819. Mrs.
Abigail Starkweather) Edgerton died at Gaines, New York on August 14,
1823. She was buried at the Eagle
Harbor Cemetery in Gaines, New York.
There is no further account of Giles Edgerton. His daughter, Hannah Marion, married
Matthew Morehouse and resided at Eagle Harbor, New York and Holly,
Michigan. Giles’ son, William Wallace,
settled in Wayne County, New York. He
