The following obituary for Mrs. Gladys (Edgerton) Birden was published in The Hartford Courant on October 24, 2007:

 

“BIRDEN, Gladys E.

 

Gladys E. Birden, 97, of Allen Road, Torrington, passed away on Tuesday (October 23, 2007).  She was the loving wife of the late Harold P. Birden.  Born July 26, 1910, in Winsted; the daughter of the late Willis and Jenny (Holcomb) Edgerton.  She loved flowers and her hobbies included croqueting.  She was also an excellent cook. She was such a devoted mother and grandmother, everyone in the entire community called her "Grandma."  She will be greatly missed.  She is survived by a son Donald E. Birden of Torrington; a daughter Betty Jane Wells of Torrington; several grandchildren and many great grandchildren.  In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Kenneth Birden and Hudson Birden; a daughter Catherine Grigos; and three brothers, Willis Edgerton Jr., Glenn Edgerton and Earl Edgerton.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 26, at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Road, New Hartford at 10 a.m.  Burial will be held at the Barkhamsted Center Cemetery, Barkhamsted.  Friends may call on Thursday, October 25, at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, New Hartford, from 6-8 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 332 N.
