Children:
Harvey Edgerton was born at Hawley, Massachusetts on January 25, 1801, the eldest son of Ezekiel and Lucy (Fales) Edgerton. He was raised in Hawley and made his living principally as a farmer. Harvey Edgerton was married to Hannah Nelson, daughter of Luther Nelson of Southwick, Massachusetts. According to the inscription on the Edgerton family monument at North Royalton Cemetery (see below), Hannah was born in the year 1804. The identity of her mother is not yet known. Harvey and Hannah had eight children: seven sons, Hiram, Horace Rudd, Luther Nelson, Charles, Ezekiel, William and Albert; and one daughter, Clarissa. All of the children survived to adulthood and had families of their own. Circa, 1829-1830, Harvey removed with his family to Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He settled in North Royalton Township, where he resided for the remainder of his life. Most of Harvey’s siblings also settled in North Royalton at about this time. The Edgertons were among the pioneer families of North Royalton and the road upon which the Edgerton brothers settled was subsequently named Edgerton Street. In 1830, Harvey Edgerton built a steam sawmill in the southeast part of Royalton Township, along the Brecksville border. Harvey was also active in town affairs and served for a time as a township trustee. On April 14, 1851, he was elected a director of the school district and was active in the levying of taxes for the purpose of leasing a lot and building a schoolhouse. The schoolhouse which was built the following year was located on Edgerton Street. The household of “Henry Edystant” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Royalton, Cuyahoga County, Ohio (pg. 147), with the following enumeration: 1 male “30 and under 40” (Harvey); 3 males “10 and under 15” (sons Hiram, Horace and Luther); 2 males “5 and under 10” (sons Charles and Ezekiel); 1 male “under 5 years” (son William); 1 female “30 and under 40” (wife Hannah); and, 1 female “15 and under 20” (?).
