Herbert James Edgerton was born at Wallingford,
Vermont circa 1834, the second son of Robinson H. and Rhoda (Clemons)
Edgerton. He was enumerated in the
1850 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont, as “Herbert
Edgerton, aged 16, born in Vermont”, residing in the household of Elihu
Doty. He was also enumerated in his
father’s household (also in Wallingford) as
“Holbert Edgerton, aged 18, born in Vermont. The first enumeration is believed to be the
more accurate.
Herbert J. Edgerton removed to Iowa
Falls, Iowa County, Iowa, and was residing there when he
enlisted into the Union Army on August 14, 1862, “aged 28”. He was mustered into the 32nd Iowa
Infantry, Company F as a private, and died of disease at New Orleans, Louisiana
on May 15, 1865. Herbert James
Edgerton was buried at the Chalmette
National Cemetery
in Chalmette, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana.
