Hezekiah Edgerton III was born in Norwich, Connecticut on May 25, 1769, the second son and fourth child of Hezekiah and Bethiah (Peck) Edgerton.  He was raised in Norwich and Franklin, and was married on April 26, 1789 at the Franklin Congregational Church to Marcia Brigham, daughter of Uriah and Anne (Richardson) Brigham of Coventry.  Marcia (aka.“Martha”) was born in Coventry on January 28, 1770.

Hezekiah and Marcia resided first in Franklin, Connecticut, where they had at least two children – a daughter, Marcia, born in 1789, and a son Hezekiah IV, born in 1791.  The household of “Hezekiah Edgerton Jr.” was recorded in the 1790 Census of New London County, with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 16 years and upward”  (Hezekiah); and,

2 females  (wife Marcia, and daughter Marcia).

In the early 1790’s, Hezekiah removed from Franklin to Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut.  Most of his immediate family, including his father, Hezekiah Sr., and younger brother, Azel, also settled in Coventry at this time.  A second daughter, Lucia, was born in Coventry in 1797.  The 1800 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut, records the following household for Hezekiah Edgerton Jr.:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Hezekiah);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Hezekiah);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Marcia);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Marcia); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Lucia).

Hezekiah and Marcia had another son, Ward, born in Coventry on July 12, 1803 (VRp 40), and another daughter, Anna Maria (aka “Maria A.”), born circa 1809.  Three of Hezekiah and Marcia’s children were baptized at the First Congregational Church of Coventry – Lucia and Ward on August 28, 1808, and Anna Maria on March 12, 1809.

Mrs. Marcia (Brigham) Edgerton died at Coventry, Connecticut on March 14, 1809; she may have died in childbirth, as suggested by the recent birth of her youngest daughter, Anna Maria.  Marcia’s death was recorded at the First Church of Coventry as: “Wife of Hezekiah Edgerton, aged 39 years”.  She was buried at the Nathan Hale Cemetery in Coventry, Connecticut.

The household of “Hezekiah Edgerton Jun.” was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 306), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Hezekiah);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (son Hezekiah);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (?);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Ward);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Lucia); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Anna Maria).

Hezekiah married second, Sina (aka “Lucina”) Richardson, daughter of Ebenezer and Hannah (Sprague) Richardson, of Columbia, Connecticut.  Sina was born in Tolland, Connecticut circa 1783, and was baptized at the Columbia Congregational Church (aka. “Lebanon Crank Church”) in March of 1783 (ChR 5:210).  Sina had probably been previously married to a Mr. Maxwell, as most secondary sources list her name as “Sina R. Maxwell” (see Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Books, Volume 103; pg. 91; ID #102939).  Following Hezekiah’s death, Sina lived in Coventry with the family of Brewster and Charlotte Swift (see 1850 and 1860 census records below).  Mrs. Charlotte Swift’s maiden name was Maxwell, so it is probable that she was a daughter of Sina (Richardson) Edgerton and her first husband.

Hezekiah and Sina Edgerton are known to have had at least four children – two sons, Samuel M., born January 3, 1813, and Oliver, born in May 1815; and two daughters, Lydia, born in 1817, and Mary Abby, born in March 1819.

The household of Hezekiah Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 947), with the following enumeration:

1 male “over 45 years of age”  (Hezekiah);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (son Ward);

1 male “between 16 and 18”  (son Ward);

2 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Samuel and Oliver);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (second wife Sina);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Anna Maria); and,

2 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Lydia and Mary).

The household of Hezekiah Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 263), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 60 and under 70”  (Hezekiah);

2 males “of 15 and under 20”  (sons Samuel and Oliver);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (second wife Sina); and,

2 females “of 10 and under 15”  (daughters Lydia and Mary).

The household of Hezekiah Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 94), with the following enumeration:

1 male “70 and under 80”  (Hezekiah);

1 female “50 and under 60”  (second wife Sina); and,

1 female “20 and under 30”  (daughter Lydia);

Hezekiah Edgerton III died at Coventry, Connecticut on December 21, 1843.  The record of his death at the First Church of Coventry reads: “1843, Dec. 21...Hezekiah Edgerton, 74 years”.  Hezekiah was buried beside his first wife at Nathan Hale Cemetery in Coventry.

Hezekiah’s widow, Sina, was recorded as “Lucina Edgerton, aged 67, b. CT”, in the 1850 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 316; dwelling #124; family #136; enum. August 3, 1850), residing in the household of Brewster P. and Charlotte Swift.   In the 1860 Federal Census, she was still residing with the Swifts and was recorded as “Sina Edgerton, aged 77, b. CT.”  (1860 Federal Census, Coventry, Tolland Co., CT; pg. 358; dwelling #325; family #373; enum. July 6, 1860)

Mrs. Sina (Richardson) Edgerton died at Tolland, Connecticut on October 2, 1865.  According to the record of her death (Tolland VR 4:196), she was a widow, aged 82 years, and had been born in Tolland, Connecticut.  Her occupation was listed as “housekeeping” and the cause of death was given as “old age”.  Sina was buried beside her husband, Hezekiah, at the Nathan Hale Cemetery, where her gravestone records an alternate date of death of “October 1, 1865”.
