Hial Edgerton was born at Coventry, New York on March 29, 1801, the son of Roger and Betsey (Cole) Edgerton. He was named after his next-eldest brother, who had died in infancy. The derivation of the name “Hial” is not known. Hial Edgerton was raised in Coventry and was married there on January 29, 1829 to Miss Lydia Patrick, the daughter of Robert and Polly (Gilbert) Patrick, of Saratoga County, New York. Lydia was born in Stillwater, New York on June 15, 1806. Not long after his marriage, Hial settled in the town of Nineveh (aka “Colesville”) in Broome County, New York – just south of Coventry. The family also resided briefly in Tompkins (Delaware County), where they were recorded in the 1830 Federal Census (see below). Hial and Lydia had a family of nine children – four sons, Edgar, Franklin, Albert DeLancy and Hial Jr., and five daughters, Sarah Ann, Mary Eliza, Almira A., Emily S. and Sarah Elizabeth. Tragically, four of the children (Edgar, Sarah Ann, Sarah Elizabeth and Hial Jr.) died in infancy. The following entries regarding the family of Hial Edgerton are abstracted from Genealogical Gleanings of Early Broome County Newspapers: Edgerton, Edgar s/o Hial and Lydia Edgerton, died July 15, 1845 of illness age 15 years. Edgerton, Hial Jr. s/o Hial and Lydia, died in Nineveh July 26, 1849 age 1 years. Edgerton, Lydia w/o Hial Edgerton died in Nineveh Nov. 23, 1870 age 61 years. Edgerton, Sarah Ann d/o Hial and Lydia Edgerton, died in Nineveh Aug. 13, 1841 age 10 years. Edgerton, Sarah E. died of illness in Nineveh Apr. 23, 1856 [sic] age 12 years. Hial Edgerton made his living principally as a merchant. He served as the first postmaster for Nineveh when it was established September 25, 1833. Several deeds of purchase were filed for Hial Edgerton in the Broome County Book of Deeds, including: On June 13, 1844, property on Carroll Street from John C. Moore On July 24, 1844, property in the village of Nineveh from William Butler On June 13, 1846, property in the town of Colesville from John W. Harper The household of Hial Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Tompkins, Delaware County, New York (pg. 207), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 20 and under 30” (Hial); 1 male “of 15 and under 20” (? – probably younger brother Albert); 1 male “under 5 years of age” (son Edgar); and, 1 female “of 20 and under 30” (wife Lydia). The household of “H. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census
of Colesville, Broome County, New York (pg. 13), with the following
enumeration: 1 male “of 30 and under 40” (Hial); 1 male “of 10 and under 15” (son Edgar); 1 male “of 5 and under 10” (son Franklin); 1 female “of 30 and under 40” (wife Lydia); 2 females “of 5 and under 10” (daughters Sarah Ann and Mary); and, 2 females “under 5 years of age” (daughters Almira and Emily ). The household of Hial Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Colesville, Broome County, New York (pp. 26-27; dwelling #93; family #97, enum. July 13, 1850), as follows:
Hial Edgerton died at Nineveh (Colesville), New York on June 17, 1854, at the age of fifty-three years. He was buried in the family plot at Nineveh Cemetery, where three of his children had previously been buried. Hial left a Last Will and Testament, dated April 1, 1854, in which he mentioned his “beloved wife Lydia Edgerton” and six children, “Franklin Edgerton, Mary Eliza Edgerton, Almira Edgerton, Emily Edgerton, Albert D. Edgerton and Sarah E. Edgerton”. Hial’s widow, Lydia, was named co-executor, together with Merlin Jackson. The will, witnessed by Riley Bush and Willard M. Hoyt (both of Colesville, New York), was proved at Broome County Surrogate Court in Binghamton on July 21, 1854, before S. K. Dickinson, County Judge. The household of Mrs. Lydia Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Colesville, Broome County, New York (pg. 747; dwelling #634; family #634; enum. July 9, 1860), as follows:
Mrs.
Lydia (Patrick) Edgerton died at Nineveh (Colesville), New York on November 23,
1870, aged sixty-four years. She was
buried beside her husband and children at the Nineveh Cemetery. Original
