Hiram Edgerton was born in Wallingford, Vermont on July 28, 1800, the second son of Philip Edgerton and his first wife, Mary “Polly” Hall.  Hiram’s mother died when he was seven years old and his father was remarried shortly afterwards to Narcissa Osborne.

Hiram was raised in Wallingford.  Circa 1825 – 1830, he removed along with his father and most of the immediate family to Chautauqua County, New York.  He was a farmer by profession and settled first in Ellery township.

Hiram Edgerton was married twice.  His first wife was Louisa Pomeroy.  The History and Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family (Albert A. Pomeroy, 1912, Vol. 2, pg. 349) reports that Louisa was the daughter of Oliver and Mary (Platte) Pomeroy of New Marlborough, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  According to the exact age at death recorded on her tombstone (see below), Louisa was born on May 15, 1804.  The 1880 and 1900 Federal Census enumerations of her son, Daniel G., confirm that Louisa was born in the state of Massachusetts.

Hiram and Louisa (Pomeroy) Edgerton had four children – Maryette, Daniel G., Laura Cordelia and Sarah Lavinia.  All four children survived to adulthood and raised families.

The household of Hiram Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Ellery, Chautauqua County, New York (pg. 316), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Hiram);

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (wife Louisa); and,

1 female “under 5 years of age”  (daughter Maryette).

The 1835 New York State Census of Ellery (Chautauqua County) recorded the following statistics for the household of Hiram Edgerton:

Total # of males:

Total # of females:

Circa 1835 – 1840, Hiram Edgerton removed to Dayton, Cattaraugus County, New York (just east of Chautauqua County).  The household of Hiram “Egerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Dayton, Cattaraugus County, New York (pg. 118), with the following enumeration:

1 male “30 & under 40”  (Hiram);

Mrs. Louisa (Pomeroy) Edgerton died at Dayton, New York on July 20, 1841, aged “37 years, 2 months, 5 days”.  She was buried at the Cottage Cemetery on the western side of Dayton township.  Hiram was remarried in February 1843 to Mary Ann Judd.  Census records (see below) indicate that Hiram had three more children by his second wife:  sons, Dexter W. (who died young), George Dexter, and Edmund Augustus.

Hiram Edgerton “of Dayton” was mentioned in the Villanova Circuit Church Probationer Records 1859 – 1867.  He was first received in full communion on September 4, 1861.  The marriage of Hiram’s daughter, Sarah Lavinia to “Martin J. Merrifield” on January 1, 1857 was noted in the Villanova Circuit Church Marriage Records 1856 – 1888.  The record states the marriage took place at the “House of H. Edgerton, Dayton” and that the witnesses were “Nelson Leonard and wife” – that is, Sarah’s eldest sister, Maryette (Edgerton) Leonard and her husband, Joseph Nelson Leonard.

In the latter 1860’s, Hiram Edgerton sold or transferred his property in Dayton and purchased a large farm in Hanover Township in the neighboring county of Chautauqua.  In 1879, Hiram’s heirs “George D. Edgerton, Edmund A. Edgerton and Mary Anne Edgerton” sold the western 40 acres of this property to Caroline M. Grantier.  The remaining 100 acres of the farm are found listed on the F. W. Beers 1881 Atlas of Chautauqua County as the property of “G. Edgarton”.  The present location of this farm is at 308 Route 39 in Forestvale (Hanover Township).

The household of Hiram “Edjartin” was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Hanover Township, Chautauqua County, New York (pg. 421; dwelling #341; family #341; enum. July 14, 1870), as follows:

The following biography of Hiram Edgerton is extracted from Historical and Biographical History of the Township of Dayton, Cattaraugus County, New York (Charles J. Shults, ed.; April 1901; pg. 102):

“Hiram Edgerton was born at Wallingford, Rutland County, Vt., in the year 1800.  In 1821 he moved to the town of Ellery, Chautauqua County, N. Y., where he was soon after married to Louisa Pomeroy; five children were born to them; one died in infancy and the other four are still living, being Maryette Leonard, wife of Joseph N. Leonard of Dayton; Daniel G. Edgerton of Carbondale, Colorado; Cordelia, widow of Robert W. Marshall of North East, Pa.; Lavinia, widow of Martin Merrifield of Corry, Pa.  Louisa Edgerton died about 1840 and a few years later the husband was married to Mary Ann Judd, by whom he had three children, one of whom died in infancy; George D. Edgerton, who died a few years ago at Earlville, Ill., and Edmund A. Edgerton, now living at Lansing, Mich.  In 1836, Hiram Edgerton moved to the town of Dayton and settled on lot No. 47, where he continued to reside for upwards of thirty years; later he moved to Nashville, Chautauqua County, where he died in June, 1871.”

Genealogical and Family History of Central New York (William Richard Cutter, A.M.; Lewis Historical Publishing Company, New York, 1912; Volume II, pg. 1078) gives the following account of the family of Hiram Edgerton:

“Hiram, son of Philip and Mary (Hall) Edgerton, was born at Wallingford, Vermont, July 28, 1800, died May, 1871.  He married (first) Louisa Pomeroy, (second) Mary Ann Judd.  Children by first wife: Maryette, born 1830, died June 4, 1905, married Joseph Nelson Leonard; Cordelia, married Robert W. Marshall, now living at North East, Pennsylvania; Lavinia, married Martin Merrifield, died about 1906; Daniel G., lived at Carbondale, Colorado.  Children by second wife: Dexter, died in infancy; George D.; Edmond A., all deceased.”

Hiram Edgerton died at Nashville (Hanover Township), Chautauqua County, New York on May 30, 1871, aged “70 years, 10 months, 2 days”.  He was buried beside his first wife, Louisa, at Cottage Cemetery in Dayton.  Hiram’s young son, Dexter W. (by his second wife), was also buried in the family plot.  The three gravestones there bear the following inscriptions:

Hiram Edgerton’s eldest son, Daniel G., settled first in Ohio, where he married Mary E. Brewer and raised a family, later removing to Colorado State.  The three elder daughters were each married and resided in western New York State and Erie County, Pennsylvania.  The eldest daughter, Maryette, and her husband, Joseph Nelson Leonard, resided in the Dayton vicinity and were also buried at Cottage Cemetery.  George Dexter, the third-born son, was married twice.  After the death of his first wife, Elma, he removed to Earlville, LaSalle County, Illinois, where he died in the latter 1890’s, leaving a wife and two children.  The youngest son, Edmund Augustus, removed for a while to Colorado with his half-brother, Daniel G., but later settled in Lansing, Michigan, where he was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census with his second wife, Lenna, and three children.  Edmund’s mother, Mary Ann (Hiram’s second wife), was residing with Edmund at the time of the 1894 Michigan State Census and the 1900 Federal Census; she died on December 6, 1908 and was buried at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt Township, Ingham County, Michigan along with Edmund and several of his family.

We are indebted to Mr. Fred Griswold, a descendant of Hiram’s daughter, Laura Cordelia (Edgerton) Marshall, who has shared his extensive research and correspondence on this line of the Edgerton family, including many photos and biographical excerpts.  Those interested in this line of the Edgerton family, are highly recommended to his website, Walling/Marshall Families of Erie Co., Pennsylvania (located at Rootsweb.com freepages), which contains extensive information (pedigrees, bios, photos, etc.) on the Edgerton, Walling, Marshall and other related families of Erie County, Pennsylvania.
