The household of “Herman Edgerton” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin (pg. 470; dwelling #1099; family #1051; enum. June 29, 1860), as follows:
The Portrait and Biographical Album of Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin (Chicago, Illinois: Acme Publishing Co.; 1889; pp. 253-254) provides the following biography of Hiram Edgerton: “HIRAM EDGERTON, one of the honored pioneers of Fond du Lac County, residing on section 23, Fond du Lac Township, was born in Rome, Oneida Co., N.Y., Sept. 30, 1802, and is a son of Roswell and Sarah (Seldon) Edgerton, the former a native of Connecticut, and the latter of Vermont. The education of our subject was received in the common schools, and he was reared to manhood on his father’s farm. On the 24th day of March, 1825, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda Felton, and by their union were born six children: Frances A., the eldest, is now the wife of J.J. Tripp, who resides in Fond du Lac; Sarah J., residing in Dodge County, Wis., is the wife of the Hon. D.C. Williams; Sylvia A., wife of O. Dunham, is living in Empire Township; Ophelia R., is the wife of the Hon. S. B. Stanchfield, whose sketch will be found on another page of this volume; Charles F. is now managing the old homestead; and Fay is deceased. At the age of twenty-one years Hiram Edgerton left the
parental roof, and started out in life for himself. On leaving home he was first employed as a
farm hand, in which line he continued for six months, when he purchased a
small tract of land of twenty-five acres, together with a team, and entered
into business. With the same energy
which has characterized his course through life, he began the work of
cultivation and development, and while engaged in the improvement of his farm
he boarded with his father about a year.
By economy and industry his financial resources were increased, and in
the course of time he extended the boundaries of his little farm until it
comprised 100 acres, which he continued to cultivate until 1840, when he sold
out. Entering into partnership with
his brother, together they purchased 200 acres of land, and engaged in its
cultivation for six years, when he rented his interests to his brother. Hearing favorable reports of the land in
Wisconsin, and believing that the opportunities in the new and growing West
were superior to those of the older and more established States of the East,
he made a trip to Fond du Lac County, with a view of making a permanent
location did the country meet with his wishes. On arriving at his destination he found the
land and climate to be all that it was represented, while the future
prospects were also bright. Our
subject therefore determined that his lot should be cast with the pioneer
settlers of the community, and he at once began making preparation for the
removal of his family to the new home.
He settled on a farm of 160 acres, which had previously been entered
by his brother, and during the winter and spring he proceeded to erect a
frame house. Returning to Some years after the removal of the family to Mr. Edgerton is numbered among the self-made men of Although Mr. Edgerton has attained the great age of eight-seven years, he is still hale and hearty. On his eighty-seventh birthday he plowed a furrow two miles in length, which would be equivalent to a little over a quarter of an acre, and did it in forty-four minutes.” The following obituary
for Hiram Edgerton was published in The
Daily Inter Ocean (Chicago, Illinois) on Friday, December 21, 1894: “FOND DU LAC, WIS., Dec 20. – Special Telegram. – Hiram Edgerton, a resident of this county since 1846, died suddenly last night.
