The Portrait and Biographical Album of Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin (Chicago, Illinois: Acme Publishing Co.; 1889; pp. 253-254) provides the following biography of Hiram Edgerton:

“HIRAM EDGERTON, one of the honored pioneers of Fond du Lac County, residing on section 23, Fond du Lac Township, was born in Rome, Oneida Co., N.Y., Sept. 30, 1802, and is a son of Roswell and Sarah (Seldon) Edgerton, the former a native of Connecticut, and the latter of Vermont.

The education of our subject was received in the common schools, and he was reared to manhood on his father’s farm.  On the 24th day of March, 1825, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda Felton, and by their union were born six children:  Frances A., the eldest, is now the wife of J.J. Tripp, who resides in Fond du Lac; Sarah J., residing in Dodge County, Wis., is the wife of the Hon. D.C. Williams; Sylvia A., wife of O. Dunham, is living in Empire Township; Ophelia R., is the wife of the Hon. S. B. Stanchfield, whose sketch will be found on another page of this volume; Charles F. is now managing the old homestead; and Fay is deceased.

At the age of twenty-one years Hiram Edgerton left the parental roof, and started out in life for himself.  On leaving home he was first employed as a farm hand, in which line he continued for six months, when he purchased a small tract of land of twenty-five acres, together with a team, and entered into business.  With the same energy which has characterized his course through life, he began the work of cultivation and development, and while engaged in the improvement of his farm he boarded with his father about a year.  By economy and industry his financial resources were increased, and in the course of time he extended the boundaries of his little farm until it comprised 100 acres, which he continued to cultivate until 1840, when he sold out.  Entering into partnership with his brother, together they purchased 200 acres of land, and engaged in its cultivation for six years, when he rented his interests to his brother.  Hearing favorable reports of the land in Wisconsin, and believing that the opportunities in the new and growing West were superior to those of the older and more established States of the East, he made a trip to Fond du Lac County, with a view of making a permanent location did the country meet with his wishes.  On arriving at his destination he found the land and climate to be all that it was represented, while the future prospects were also bright.  Our subject therefore determined that his lot should be cast with the pioneer settlers of the community, and he at once began making preparation for the removal of his family to the new home.  He settled on a farm of 160 acres, which had previously been entered by his brother, and during the winter and spring he proceeded to erect a frame house.  Returning to New York for his family, they were soon comfortably established in the little home, and he at once began the work of developing the wild and uncultivated prairie.

Some years after the removal of the family to Fond du Lac County, Mrs. Edgerton was called to her final rest.  Her death occurred at her home, on the 14th day of November, 1862 [sic], and her remains were interred at Rienzi Cemetery.  Mr. Edgerton was again married, March 29, 1866, Mrs. Sarah Olmstead becoming his wife.  Mrs. Edgerton is a daughter of Robert Huston, and by her former marriage had a family of three children, as follows:  Wallace J., minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Kingston, Wis.; Charles C., a leading homeopathic physician in Kansas City, Mo.; and Austin F., who is also a practicing physician, and resides in Green Bay, Wis.  The death of Mr. Olmstead occurred Oct. 19, 1854.

Mr. Edgerton is numbered among the self-made men of Rock County.  His little farm of twenty-five acres formed the foundation to his present possessions.  Undaunted by trials he pressed on, and by his resolute will and determined energy, combined with fair dealing and good business ability, he accumulated a comfortable property, which enables him to pass his declining years in rest from the arduous labors of his earlier life.  To his original farm he added 100 acres, but now has only about forty acres remaining, for to each of his children, as they left the parental roof, he gave a portion.  He has ever manifested an interest in the welfare of the community, and in every public enterprise calculated to advance the interests of town or county, has given his support.  For the long period of sixty years he has been a follower of the Master, and a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, to which his wife also belongs.  His life has been a busy one, for when his attention has not been taken up with his business pursuits, he has given his time to works of benevolence and charity, or to the promotion of his county’s interests.  He has witnessed the growth and development of Fond du Lac County from its earliest days.  At the time of his arrival the now thriving city of Fond du Lac contained but two stores, a blacksmith shop, a tavern, a wagon shop, a school-house, and a few scattering cabins.  Much of the land was yet in possession of the Government, hardly a furrow had been turned on the prairies, and the echoes were unawakened by the woodman’s axe.  Not only has Mr. Edgerton been a witness of the rapid transformation, which since that time has taken place, but he has been an active participant in the growth and development, and to him, among others, is due the credit of laying the foundation of one of the best counties in this vast commonwealth.

Although Mr. Edgerton has attained the great age of eight-seven years, he is still hale and hearty.  On his eighty-seventh birthday he plowed a furrow two miles in length, which would be equivalent to a little over a quarter of an acre, and did it in forty-four minutes.”

The following obituary for Hiram Edgerton was published in The Daily Inter Ocean (Chicago, Illinois) on Friday, December 21, 1894:
