Hiram Edgerton, son of Harvey and Hannah (Nelson) Edgerton.
Sarah Ann West
Children:
Hiram Edgerton was born at Hawley, Massachusetts on August 29, 1825, the eldest son of Harvey and Hannah (Nelson) Edgerton. During his infancy, Hiram’s parents removed along with several other family members to Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Hiram was raised in North Royalton and probably resided there the entirety of his short life. He made his living as a blacksmith. Hiram Edgerton was married at Cuyahoga County, Ohio on September 1, 1843 to Sarah Ann West. According to the 1850 Federal Census (see below), Sarah was born circa 1829 in the state of Ohio. Beyond this, nothing further is known of her parentage. She may have been related to Jane West, who was married to Hiram’s younger brother, Charles. Hiram and Sarah had only one child – a son, Horace Irwin, born at North Royalton on April 12, 1844. The household of Hiram Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Royalton (District 3), Cuyahoga County, Ohio (pg. 155; dwelling #2836; family #3006; enum. September 10, 1850), as follows:
Hiram Edgerton died on April 12, 1853, at the age
of 27 years. He was buried at the
North Royalton Cemetery on Royalton Road (Rte. 82) in North Royalton,
Ohio. His gravestone there
bears the following inscription: HIRAM EDGERTON DIED April 12, 1853 Aged 29 Yrs. There is currently no record of the death or
burial of Hiram’s wife, Sarah Ann (West) Edgerton. She may have been the Sarah Edgerton who
married Robin Basset at Cuyahoga County, Ohio on November 13, 1855. Hiram and Sarah’s only son, Horace Irwin, served
in the Ohio Cavalry (6th Regiment, Company K). He resided in North Royalton for the
majority of his life and was also buried at the North Royalton Cemetery. Original Source Documents: 1850 Federal Census – household of Hiram Edgerton; Royalton (District
