Hiram Bingham Edgerton was born at Hawley, Massachusetts
on March 11, 1820, the youngest of twelve children born to Ezekiel and Lucy
(Fales) Edgerton. He was presumably named
after the missionary, Hiram Bingham, “whose departure for Hawaii in 1819 was
widely publicized” (see David W. Dumas; Joseph Edgerton of Norwich,
Connecticut and his Descendants; East Greenwich, Rhode Island; 1982).
The Memorial Record of the County of Cuyahoga
and City of Cleveland Ohio (Chicago, Ill.: The Lewis Publishing Co.; 1894;
pg. 385) provides the following biographical excerpt for Hiram Bingham
Edgerton:
“Hiram Edgerton, who was born in Massachusetts
in 1819 [sic], drove from his native State to Ohio in an early day, purchased a tract of
wooded land in Royalton township, Cuyahoga county, and was engaged in
lumbering and farming. He followed the
former occupation during the winter seasons, having hauled his lumber to the Ohio canal. At the time of his death he owned 135 acres
of land. Mr. Edgerton was married in
Royalton township, to Wealthy Perry, a daughter of Caleb Perry, and they had
two children, – Melvin P.; and Adelaide, now
Mrs. John Coats, of Brooklyn. The wife and mother died in 1875 [sic], and
was buried in the Center cemetery. Mr.
Edgerton afterward married a sister of his former wife. His death occurred March 31, 1883 [sic],
and his widow still resides at Center.
In political matters, Mr. Edgerton was an active worker in the
Republican party.”
The household of Hiram B. Edgerton was recorded in
the 1850
Federal Census of Royalton (District 3), Cuyahoga County, Ohio
(pg. 155; dwelling #2830; family #2999; enum. September 10, 1850), as
