Jane West
Children:
Rhoda L. Taylor, daughter of Philonzo and Thirza (McClintock) Taylor.
Horace Rudd Edgerton was born June 13, 1827 at
Hawley, Massachusetts, the second son of Harvey and Hannah (Nelson) Edgerton. During his infancy, Horace’s parents
removed from Massachusetts and settled in North Royalton, Cuyahoga County,
Ohio. Horace lived in Cuyahoga County
for the entirety of his adult life – residing variously in North Royalton and
Cleveland City. He made his living as
a farmer teamster. Horace Edgerton was twice married. He was married first on July 11, 1845 at
Cuyahoga County, Ohio to Jane West.
Jane’s parentage is not known.
According to the 1850 Federal Census enumeration, Jane was born in New
York State circa 1827. Jane may have
been related to Sarah Ann West, who was married to Horace’s elder
brother. Horace and Jane (West)
Edgerton had only one child – a daughter, Ellen J., born June 10, 1850 at
North Royalton. According to family
accounts, Ellen was married to Daniel Francis and had one son, Delaney
Francis. The household of Horace Edgerton was recorded in
the 1850 Federal
Census of
Royalton Township,
Mrs. Jane (West) Edgerton presumably died shortly
after the birth of her daughter, Ellen – perhaps in childbirth. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census,
Horace and Ellen were residing with his parents, Harvey and Hannah, in North
Royalton Township. Horace was
remarried shortly afterwards – on February 26, 1861 at Cuyahoga County, Ohio –
to Rhoda L. Taylor, daughter of Philonzo and Thirza (McClintock) Taylor of
Royalton Township. Horace and Rhoda apparently
did not have any children. The household of Horace Edgerton was recorded in
the 1870 Federal
Census of
Cleveland (Ward 10),
At the time of the 1880
Federal Census, Horace and Rhoda Edgerton were recorded in Cleveland,
Cuyahoga County, Ohio in the same dwelling as Rhoda’s widowed mother, Thirza Taylor,
and her two unmarried sisters, Lucinda and Sarah. The two households (pg. 107; dwelling #509;
family #578-579; enum. June 12, 1880) were enumerated as follows:
The household of Horace Edgerton was recorded in
the 1900
Federal Census of Royalton,
According to the above census record, Rhoda had not had any children. Horace’s occupation was listed as “farmer”. Original Source Documents: 1850 Federal
