Horatio Nelson Edgerton was born in Hudson, Columbia County, New York circa 1822, the second son of Jabez and Eliza (Bradley) Edgerton.  He went generally by the name of “Nelson Edgerton”.  The first documented records of him are in the town of Hudson, Columbia County, New York, where he was recorded as a head of household in the federal censuses of 1850 and 1860.

Nelson Edgerton was married (probably circa 1840-1843) to Catharine M. Tenbroeck.  Catharine’s parentage has not been established, although later census records state that she was born in New York in June 1823.  She may have been then daughter of Mrs. Catharine Tenbroeck who was recorded (along with a daughter, Ann) with Nelson and Catharine’s family in the 1860 Federal Census (see below).   Nelson and Catharine resided for many years in the town of Hudson, New York.  They had least three children (all presumably born in Hudson):  Kate E., born circa 1843, who married John J. Branner; Frank P., born April 24, 1846, who married Martha M. ----; and Horatio C., born circa 1856, who married Margaret A. ----.
