The following obituary for Hugh Simon Edgerton was published by the Downing and Lahey Funeral Home (Wichita, Kansas):

 

“Edgerton, Hugh Simon, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.

 

Born Jan. 4, 1916 in Wichita, he attended KU Graduate School, was a graduate of William Jewell College and New York University School of Retailing and served as a 1st Lt. in the Army during World War II.  He was the owner and operator of House of Carpet in Wichita for many years before retiring in 1998.  Hugh was a former resident of Eastborough and was Eastborough Chief of Police.

 

Hugh was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Wichita, a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Albert Pike Masonic Lodge, Wichita Consistory as a 33rd Degree Mason, the Midian Shrine and The Royal Order of Jesters. Hugh was active in Friends of McConnell and the Wichita Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee.

 

Every Christmas for over 40 years he brought joy to children in his portrayal of Santa Claus for the Institute of Logopedics, Wichita Children’s Home, Wichita Country Club and Crestview Country Club as well as his friends and family.

 

Survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Anne Bono, Sherman, TX, Carolyn Nickel, Wichita; stepson, Wayne Snyder, Chicago, IL; stepdaughter, Kimberly Osborn, Cotter, AR; sister, Mary Ann Ranney, Wichita; 6 granddaughters; 4 grandsons; 1 great-granddaughter; a niece and nephews.

 

Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Downing and Lahey Mortuary East. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Wichita. A memorial has been established in his name at First Presbyterian Church of Wichita. Downing & Lahey Mortuary East.”
