left New York and moved west, residing for a short time in Unionville,
Ashtabula County, Ohio before finally
settling in Jacob Edgerton was listed as
a head of household in the 1840 Federal Census of
Galesburg, 1 male “of 50 and under 60” (Jacob); 1 male “of 20 and under 30” (son Solomon); 1 male “of 15 and under 20” (son Reuben); 1 male “of 10 and under 15” (son ?); and, 1 female “of 50 and under 60” (wife Mary). Enumerated just before and after Jacob on this census roll (each living alone) were “D. Edgerton” and “S. Edgerton” (presumably Jacob’s nephews, David and Sidney – sons of his elder brother, Jedediah). The town of Galesburg was incorporated January 27, 1841 and Jacob Edgerton was subsequently elected one of the first trustees on April 5, 1841 (see Voices of the Prairie Land; Martin Litvin; Galesburg, Illinois: Mother Bickerdyke Historical Collection; 1972; Vol I, pg. 22). Jacob Edgerton died at Mrs. Mary (Stoddard)
