Jacob Edgerton was born at Pawlet, Vermont on March 18, 1785, the second son of Jedediah and Lucy (Curtis) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Pawlet on August 3, 1788.  Three of his brothers – Jedediah Jr., Curtis and Joshua – were baptized on the same time.

Jacob was raised in Pawlet, Vermont.  Circa 1803, he removed along with his parents and elder brother, Jedediah, and settled in the town of Moriah in Essex County, New York.

Jacob Edgerton was married on April 3, 1803 at Moriah, New York to Mary Stoddard, daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Wright) Stoddard of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Rupert, Vermont.  Mary was born at Pittsfield on December 6, 1782.  Jacob and Mary (Stoddard) Edgerton had five sons:  Marshall Grove, Josiah Wright, John Franklin, Solomon Everest and Reuben Curtis.  The various census enumerations of the family (see below) indicate that there may have been additional children who died young.

Jacob Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1810 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York (pg. 55), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (Jacob);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Mary); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter ?).

Jacob Edgerton was listed again as a head of household in the 1820 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York (pg. 23).  At that time, his family was enumerated with the following individuals:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Jacob);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

4 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Marshall, Josiah, John and Solomon);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Mary);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (daughter ?).

The household of Jacob Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York, with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 40 and under 50”  (Jacob);

2 males “of 15 and under 20”  (sons Marshall and Josiah);

2 males “of 10 and under 15”  (sons John and Solomon);

1 male “of 5 and under 10”  (son Reuben);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son ?);

1 females “of 40 and under 50”  (wife Mary);

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (daughter ?);

1 female “under 5 years of age”  (daughter ?).

Circa 1836, Jacob Edgerton left New York and moved west, residing for a short time in Unionville, Ashtabula County, Ohio  before finally settling in Knox County, Illinois just outside the present city of Galesburg.  Three of Jacob’s sons each gradually joined their father in the move west.  A number of his nephews and other relatives also took part in this migration.

Jacob Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1840 Federal Census of Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois (pg. 48).  The enumeration of his household was as follows:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (Jacob);

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (son Solomon);

1 male “of 15 and under 20”  (son Reuben);

1 male “of 10 and under 15”  (son ?); and,

1 female “of 50 and under 60” (wife Mary).

Enumerated just before and after Jacob on this census roll (each living alone) were “D. Edgerton” and “S. Edgerton” (presumably Jacob’s nephews, David and Sidney – sons of his elder brother, Jedediah).

The town of Galesburg was incorporated January 27, 1841 and Jacob Edgerton was subsequently elected one of the first trustees on April 5, 1841 (see Voices of the Prairie Land; Martin Litvin; Galesburg, Illinois: Mother Bickerdyke Historical Collection; 1972; Vol I, pg. 22).

Jacob Edgerton died at Galesburg, Illinois on April 9, 1843.

Mrs. Mary (Stoddard) Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1850 Federal Census of Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois (pg. 348; dwelling #536, family #540; enum. September 20, 1850).  She was residing alone and was enumerated as “Mary Edgerton, aged 61, born in New York”.  Mary died at Galesburg on November 5, 1858.

The burial locations of Jacob and Mary (Stoddard) Edgerton have not been located.
