Edgerton was born at Canton, Connecticut in August of 1832. He was the only surviving child of Lester
and Rhoda Edgerton. His father died
while Jacob was still an infant and his mother was subsequently remarried to
Joel Dowd. Jacob was enumerated in his
stepfather’s household in Harwinton, Litchfield County, Connecticut (pg. 245;
dwelling #114; family #123; enum. August 31, 1850) as “Jacob, aged 18, born
in Connecticut”. The
