James A. Edgerton, son of Robinson H. and Rhoda (Clemons) Edgerton.

born:

~1830; Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT.  (CR WI1880 Texas – “ae 50y”)

James A. Edgerton was born circa 1830 in Wallingford, Vermont.  He was the eldest son of Robinson H. Edgerton and Rhoda Clemons.  James resided in Rutland County, Vermont for the majority of his adult life, later removing to Marathon County, Wisconsin, where his parents and younger brother, Lewis, had previously settled.  He made his living as a farmer and laborer.

There are very few records regarding James Edgerton.  At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, he was recorded in the household of his uncle, Harley Edgerton, in Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 321; dwelling #332; family #340; enum. August 10, 1850).  He was enumerated as, “James Edgerton, farmer, aged 19, b. in Vermont”.

James Edgerton was listed in the Wallingford Poll Lists of 1854.  He was assessed with a standard poll of $2.00, plus an additional $0.90 for one horse.  Since he was listed owning no property, James was probably still living with his uncle, Harley Edgerton, who was recorded just previously on the Poll List.

At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, James was still residing with his uncle, Harley Edgerton, in Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 435; dwelling #532; family #532; enum. June 27, 1860).  He was enumerated then as “James Edgerton, aged 39 [sic], b. in Vermont”.

James Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Middletown, Rutland County (pg. 471; dwelling #57; family #62; enum. June 24, 1870).  He was residing at the time in the household of Lyman Atwater, and was enumerated as, “James Edgerton, farm laborer, aged 40, b. in Vermont”.

By the time of the 1880 Federal Census, James Edgerton had removed to Texas, Marathon County, Wisconsin, where he was recorded in the household of his younger brother, “Louis F. Edgerton” (pg. 416; dwelling #2; family #2; enum. June 7, 1880).  He was enumerated as “James A. Edgerton, brother, aged 50, laborer, born in Vermont, both parents born in Vermont”.

This is the last known record of James Edgerton.  There is no account of James ever marrying or having children.
