Children:
James Everett Edgerton was born at Charleston,
South Carolina, the son of Everett Wheeler Edgerton and his first wife, Jane
Fields. James was raised in Charleston
and resided there the entirety of his lifetime. He made his living as a bookkeeper. In July of 1862, James E. Edgerton enlisted in the
Confederate Army. He served, along
with his younger brother, Everett C., in the 25th Regiment of the South
Carolina Infantry (Eutaw Regiment). He
was commissioned a sergeant in Company A of the regiment (see National Park Service, Civil War Soldiers
and Sailors Online). James Edgerton’s wife was Lucretia Reeve, daughter
of James Walker and Sarah (Manson) Reeve of Oxford, England and Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. To date, no primary
record of James and Lucretia’s marriage has been found; it is presumed to
have taken place at Charleston shortly before the birth of their eldest child
in July of 1865. James and Lucretia
had three children: one son, Everett
Wheeler; and two daughter, Cecilia Crafts and Jean Fields. The household of James Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal
