James H. Edgerton served in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He enlisted from New Jersey on August 26, 1861, and served as a private in the 1st New Jersey Cavalry Regiment (K Company).  He applied for a Civil War invalid pension on October 28, 1890; and his widow, “Nettie E. Edgerton”, later applied for a widow’s pension on October 6, 1917.  Both applications were filed from the state of New Jersey (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #893010, Certificate #658725; and Application #1108274, Certificate #845431).

 

The household of James Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey (pg. 289; dwelling #127; family #134; enum. June 9, 1880), as follows:

According to the above census record, Nettie was the mother of four children, two of whom were still living.  James’ occupation was listed as “day laborer”, and Frank was noted as “at school.”

According to the above census record, Nettie was the mother of four children, two of whom were still living.  James’ occupation was listed as “Labor – Odd Jobs” and Frank was listed as a “Laundry-man – Laundry”.

“Nettie Eugenia Freeman, b June 3, 1858, m James H. Edgerton, July 4, 1877.  P O Paulina, N. J.  Laborer; formerly taught singing school and gave music lessons.  Methodist Episcopal.  C, Charles, John, Ethel, Frank.

 

Charles Grant Edgerton, b August 18, 1878, m Rose A. Titman, December 24, 1906.  Res 96  Rose street, Phillipsburg, N. J.  Employee Lehigh & Hudson R. R.  Attend Methodist Episcopal church.

John J. Edgerton, b April 10, 1881, d February 8, 1883.

Ethel May Edgerton, b May 23, 1883, d November 1, 1887.

Frank Alexander Edgerton, b June 20, 1887.”

 

James H. Edgerton and his wife, Nettie, were buried at Cedar Ridge Cemetery, in the town of Blairstown, New Jersey.  Their monument there bears the following inscription:
