James Harvey Edgerton was born on September 7, 1796, the son of Ariel and Edna (Huntington) Edgerton.  He was born in Norwich, Connecticut, but grew up in Brookfield, Vermont, where his father had settled very shortly after James’ birth.

As a young man, James, together with two of his elder brothers (Charles and Nathan), removed from Brookfield and settled in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York, in the far northwestern corner of that state.  There, James was married on February 7, 1819 to Olive Morgan, daughter of Forrest and Olive (Shaw) Morgan.  Olive was born on March 6, 1797 in Rochester, Vermont.  James and Olive resided in Potsdam and had a family of seven children – three sons and four daughters.

The household of James H. Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York (pg. 134), with the following enumeraton:

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (James);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Olive); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Emily).

1 male “under 5 years of age”  (son Ezra);

1 female “of 30 and under 45”  (wife Olive); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (daughter Emily).

Mrs. Olive (Morgan) Edgerton died at Potsdam, New York on February 3, 1843.  James was remarried on January 30, 1849 to Mariam Parker, daughter of Levi and Mary (Lyon) Parker of Royalton, Vermont.  Mariam was born on May 5, 1804 in Royalton, Vermont.  James Edgerton had no children by his second wife.

James Harvey Edgerton died at Potsdam, New York on April 1, 1868, aged 71 years.  He was buried beside his first wife, Olive, and son, Ezra, at Union Cemetery in Potsdam.  James’ elder brother, Charles, his wife, Elizabeth (Shaw) Edgerton, and several in-laws were also buried at the Union Cemetery, which unfortunately has been the target of numerous vandalisms over the years and is now reportedly in severe disrepair.

James’ two elder sons – Orvis Darwin and Charles Andrew – later returned to their father’s homestate and settled in the village of Northfield (just to the north of Brookfield, where their father grew up).  They operated a successful banking business there under the name “Edgerton Brothers” and were highly respected members of the community throughout the latter part of the 1800’s.

We are grateful to Amy M. Hicks of Round Rock, Texas, who has provided much of the information included here regarding the daughters of James Edgerton.  Ms. Hicks is descended from James and Olive Edgerton’s youngest daughter, Esther Cleora (Edgerton) Wood.
