James Madison Edgerton, son of James Murray and Sarah (Wakefield) Edgerton.

Yates County Boys in Blue (Robert H. Graham; Penn Yan, New York, 1926; pg. 83) gives the following account of James M. Edgerton’s Civil War Service:

 

“148TH N.Y. INFANTRY...JAMES M. EDGERTON enlisted in Co. B at Dundee Aug. 11 aged 20 years.  Enrolled at same place Aug. 27.  Joined for duty and mustered at Geneva Aug. 27.  Transferred Aug. 6, 1863 to the 11th or 73rd Co., 1st Batt. Invalid corps which later became Co. D, 21st Veteran Reserve Corps.  Mustered out July 25, 1865, at Philadelphia, PA.”

 

James M. Edgerton applied for a Civil War invalid pension on May 4, 1883.  The application was filed from New York State and cited James’ service in the 148th New York Infantry, Co. B and the 21st Veterans Reserve Corps, Co. D (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #482522, Certificate #914603).

 

James Madison Edgerton died on April 14, 1907 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.  A copy of his death certificate was filed with the Minnesota State Department of Health (certificate #56-1622).  According to the Lakewood Cemetery Interment Records, James was buried on August 7, 1908 in the Veterans Grave Lot (Section 24, tier A1, grave 16).  Morton’s elder brother, Morton Lafayette Edgerton, was buried adjacent to him in the Veterans Grave Lot (grave 15).
