James R. Edgerton was born circa 1805 at Moriah, Essex County, New York, the son of Jedediah Edgerton Jr. and Sally Mary Spencer.  He was raised in Moriah, New York and resided there for the early years of his life, later removing west to Galesburg, Illinois along with several other relatives.

From the South Moriah Cemetery inscriptions, it is known that James’ wife was named Angelina Jane.  The death certificate of her daughter, Caroline, gives Angelina’s maiden name as Clark.  Census records (see below) indicate that James and Angelina had at least two children:  a son, Edward and a daughter, Caroline E.

James R. Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1840 Federal Census of Moriah, Essex County, New York.  The enumeration of his household was as follows:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (James);

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (possibly younger brother Eretus);

1 male “of 5 and under 10” (son Edward);

2 females “of 20 and under 30”  (wife Angelina and ?) and,

1 female “under 5 years of age” (daughter Caroline).

On February 24, 1842, James R. Edgerton was granted letters of administration on the estate of his father, Jedediah Edgerton Jr. of Moriah, by the Essex County, New York Probate Court (see Essex County Probate, Letters of Administration, Book A, pp. 296 – 297).

Mrs. Angelina Jane, wife of James Edgerton, died June 21, 1842, aged 33 years.  She was buried at the South Moriah Cemetery.

Sometime following 1842, James R. Edgerton removed to Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, where several relatives had preceded him.  He died there on June 16, 1853.  The following obituary notice was printed in The Elizabethtown Post on September 9, 1853:

“Died at Galesburgh, Illinois, 16th of June, James R. Edgerton, Esquire, formerly of Moriah, aged 48 years.”

To date, there is no further account of James’ son, Edward.  At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, his daughter, Caroline E., was residing in Milford, Oakland County, Michigan.  She was enumerated there in the household of Luman Fuller (dwelling #1039; family #1012; enum. July 20, 1860) as, “Caroline Edgerton, aged 21, teacher, b. New York”.  Caroline was married at Ann Arbor, Michigan on January 25, 1868 to David Humphrey Kirkpatrick and settled in Lebanon, Clinton County, Michigan.
