Jared Newell Edgerton was born in the year 1819,
the son of Daniel Lee and Lucretia (Case) Edgerton. Although no primary record of Jared’s birth
has been located, it is fairly certain that he was born and raised in
Barkhamsted, Litchfield County,
Connecticut, where his father
was listed as a head of household in the 1820 and 1830 Federal Censuses. Both Jared’s death record (Granby
VR 3:510) and the record of his second marriage (Granby VR 3:304) state specifically that he
was born in Barkhamsted. At the time
of his first marriage (1845), he was referred to as “of Granby”, but this was likely only his
residence at the time. Jared was a
farmer and resided variously in West Granby, Connecticut and Milwaukee
and Door Counties, Wisconsin.
On January 1, 1845, Jared N. Edgerton was married at Suffield, Connecticut
to Miss Lucelia Eliza Griffin (Suffield VR Book NB1, pg. 401). In the marriage record, Jared was called,
“Newell Edgerton of Granby”
and Lucelia, “Lucretia Griffin of
Suffield”. Jared and Lucelia had a
family of five children: four
daughters, Sarah Lucretia, Cornelia, Adaline Melissa and Elvira (aka.
“Alvira”) May; and one son, Jared Phineas.
The eldest daughter, Sarah L., died in 1862 at the age of 16. The remaining four children each survived
to adulthood, were married and had families.
Circa 1847-1850, Jared removed with his family to
southeastern Wisconsin. At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, the
family was residing in Wauwatosa, in Milwaukee County,
just west of the city of Milwaukee. The household of “J. N. Edgerton” was
recorded in the 1850 Federal
Census of
Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County,
Wisconsin (pg. 481; dwelling
#9, family #9; enum. July 12, 1850), as follows:

By 1857, the family had returned to West
Granby. The birth of the
youngest daughter (Elvira May), was entered in the Vital Records of Granby
(Book 3, pg. 14) on April 7th of that year.
Mrs. Lucelia (Griffin)
Edgerton died in West Granby,
Connecticut on May 5,
1860. The Granby
death record (VR 3:460) states that Lucelia had died in West
Granby, aged 34 years, 11 months and 5 days and lists cause of
death as “overdose of opium”. Lucelia
was buried at the West
Granby Cemetery,
where her gravestone inscription reads: “Lucelia E. Edgerton, wife of Jared
N., died May 5, 1860, aged 35 years”.
Lucelia’s death was listed in the record book of the “West Granby
Burying-Ground” (pg. 21, no. 437), as follows:
“[1860]…May 5…Lucelia E. wife of Jared N. Edgerton…[age]

The household of Jared N. Edgerton was recorded in
the 1860 Federal
Census of Granby, Hartford
County, Connecticut
(pg. 860; dwelling #183; family #186; enum. June 28, 1860), as follows:

Jared Edgerton was
remarried at Granby, Connecticut on February 3, 1861 to Naomi Sophia
King, daughter of Roland and Jeanette (Davis) King of Suffield, Connecticut. According to the marriage record (Granby VR 3:304), Jared was “aged 40, born
in Barkhamsted”, and Naomi was “aged 24, born in Suffield”. Both were residing in Granby at the time of the marriage. Jared’s cousin Alonzo Edgerton was later married to Naomi’s younger
sister, Mrs. Katherine C. (King) Roberts.
Sometime following his remarriage, Jared Edgerton
returned to Wisconsin, and resided for a
time in Fish Creek, Door County,
Wisconsin. His household was recorded in the 1870 Federal
Census of Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin (pg. 31; dwelling
#24; family #24), as follows:

Jared eventually returned to his homestate along with
his son, Jared Phineas. The latter
resided for a time in West Granby, but later removed to Mount Carmel (New Haven County). He was married to Julia Ann Burr of Sheboygan, Wisconsin
and they raised a family of seven children.
The three daughters, Cornelia, Adaline and Elvira May, were all
married while in the midwest and resided in Chippewa
County, Michigan, Hampden County, Massachusetts
and Door County, Wisconsin, respectively.
The household of Jared Edgerton was recorded in
the 1880 Federal
Census of Granby, Hartford
County, Connecticut
(pg. 512; dwelling #215; family #220; enum. June 22, 1880), as follows:

Jared Newell Edgerton died at West Granby, Connecticut
on December 12, 1893, aged 74 years.
The record of his death at Granby (VR 3:510) states that he was a
farmer, born in Barkhamsted, son of
Lee and Lucretia (Case) Edgerton. He
was still married and residing in West Granby
at the time of his death. The cause of
death was listed as “apoplexy”.
[Coincidentally, Jared’s younger brother, Anson Stiles Edgerton, had
died in West Granby (probably on a visit)
just a day earlier – on December 11th.
Whether the two deaths were related is not known. The cause of the latter’s death was listed
as “typhoid pneumonia”.]
Jared was buried at the West Granby
Cemetery, where his
gravestone was inscribed: “Jared N. Edgerton, died Dec. 12, 1893, aged 74
years”. The record of his death in the
register of the “West Granby Burying-Ground” (pg. 30, no. 613), reads as
follows:
“[1893]…Dec 14…Jared N. Edgerton…Apoplexy…[age] 74…[lot]
23”
Jared Newell Edgerton left a Last Will and Testament, dated
at Granby on
May 1, 1886, in which he mentions his wife, Naomi, and four surviving
children (ie, Jared, Adeline, Elvira and Cornelia). Naomi was granted a life interest in the
estate, after which it would pass to Jared’s only son, Jared Phineas. The three daughters were granted a nominal
bequest of one dollar each.
According to the probate record on his estate
(Granby District; Volume 13; pp. 719 – 725), Jared left a widow, Naomi S.
Edgerton, and four children: Jared P.
Edgerton, of Mount Carmel, Connecticut;
Adeline McDonald, of Barron, Wisconsin;
Alvira Thorpe, of Westfield, Massachusetts;
and Cornelia Bailey, of Drummond
Island, Michigan. Mrs. Naomi S. Edgerton petitioned for
letters of administration and they were duly granted on December 23, 1893 to
Lucien Reed, the executor named in Jared’s will. Mr. Reed subsequently made a number of
returns to the Probate Court, including an inventory of the estate, totaling
$1154.43. The estate was not
completely settled until March 23, 1910, by which time one of the daughters,
Elvira, had apparently remarried, since her name was listed, “Elvira Edgerton
Chamberlain”. A transcript of the probate record, including the
Last Will and Testament of Jared Edgerton, is attached.
