Jedediah Edgerton was born on March 27, 1819 at Antwerp, New York, the third son of Daniel and Jemima (Foster) Edgerton.  During his childhood, his family moved from Antwerp, to Martinsburg (Lewis County, New York), and from there to Ava (Oneida County, New York).  Jedediah resided in Ava for the whole of his adult life.  He made his living as a farmer.

Jedediah’s wife was Julia Ann O’Hara, daughter of Albert and Betsey O’Hara.  According to census and burial records (see below), Julia was born in Jefferson County, New York on October 23, 1829.  Jedediah and Julia Ann had a family of six children – four sons, Daniel O., Franklin Augustus, Everett Eugene and Jedediah Prentiss; and twin daughters, Jane and Jessie.  The two daughters both died at the age of four years.  The four sons were each married and with the exception of the eldest son, Daniel, raised families of their own.
