John Edgerton, son of Abel and Ruth (Baldwin) Edgerton.
Olive Fletcher
Children:
John Edgerton was born on August 9, 1791 at Mansfield, Connecticut, the second child and eldest son of Abel and Ruth (Baldwin) Edgerton. He was probably named after his paternal grandfather. John was raised in Mansfield and resided there for most of his life. He made his living as a farmer and laborer. Shortly after his twenty-first birthday, John Edgerton was deeded a parcel of land from his grandfather, Ebenezer Baldwin, for the price of five hundred dollars. The property, located in Mansfield, was described as comprising “46 acres and 68 rods be the same more or less”. In the deed, both John and Ebenezer were termed “of Mansfield”. The deed, witnessed by John Baldwin and Eben Stoddard, was executed on September 9, 1812 and recorded on October 10, 1812 (Mansfield LR 16:510). John Edgerton was married at Mansfield, Connecticut on December 28, 1828 to Olive Fletcher. Olive’s parentage has not been determined. From later burial and census records, it is estimated that she was born circa 1794, probably in Mansfield, Connecticut. John and Olive had a family of three children (at least) – Abel, Mary J. and George J. The children were presumably born in Mansfield, however the family was not entered in the vital records there. The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 250), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 30 and under 40” (John); 2 males “under 5 years of age” (sons Abel and ?); and, 1 female “of 30 and under 40” (wife Olive). At the time of this census, John was residing adjacent to his grandfather, Ebenezer Baldwin, whose household was enumerated just before John’s on the Mansfield Census Roll. The household of John “Edgarton” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 225; dwelling #131; family #144; enum. November 8, 1850), as follows:
The youngest son, George J. Edgerton, was also recorded
a month earlier in the household of Alfred Harvey in neighboring Ashford
(1850 Federal Census; Ashford, Windham Co., CT; pg. 226; dwelling #167;
family #192; enum. August 1, 1850). John Edgerton died at Ashford, Connecticut on
August 17, 1855. According to the
record of his death (Ashford Vital Records, Vol. 9, pg. 5), he was a
“laborer, married, aged 64 years, born in Mansfield, Connecticut.” The cause of death was given as hernia of
the bowels. John Edgerton was buried
at the Atwoodville Cemetery in Mansfield, Connecticut. At the time of the 1860
Federal Census, Mrs. Olive (Fletcher) Edgerton and her daughter, Mary J. (Edgerton)
White, were recorded in the household of Abial Farnum in Mansfield, Tolland
County, Connecticut (pg. 674; dwelling #213; family #238; enum. June 28,
1860). They were enumerated as
follows:
Mrs. Olive (Fletcher) Edgerton died on August 14,
1868, presumably at Mansfield, Connecticut, although no death record has been
located. She was buried beside her
husband at the Atwoodville Cemetery in Mansfield, Connecticut. Original Source
