John Clark Edgerton was born at Wallingford, Vermont in the year 1865, the eldest son of Daniel A. and Clarinda (Wickers) Edgerton.  He was raised in Wallingford and Benson, Vermont.  His father died when John was fourteen years old.

At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, John was recorded in the household of Joel Woodbury in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont (pg. 281; dwelling #139; family #155; enum. June 16, 1880).  He was enumerated as “John C. Edgerton, aged 15, servant, farm laborer, born in Vermont, both parents born in Vermont”.

John C. Edgerton was married on December 8, 1885 at Benson, Vermont on to Miss Nellie Martin.  According to the Benson marriage record (Vital Records, Book 2, pg. 9), John was aged 20, a laborer, born at Wallingford, Vermont, son of Danl. and Clara Edgerton; and Nellie was aged 18, born at Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Clinton and Frances (Bailey) Martin.  The 1900 Federal Census (see below), reports that Nellie was born in September of 1868.

John and Nellie had four children, Hattie Elizabeth, Carl Daniel, Clara May and a stillborn son.  Only two of the children are known to have survived to adulthood – son Carl and daughter Hattie (aka “Helen”).  The family resided variously in Benson, Weston and Londonderry, Vermont.

John Clark Edgerton died at Fort Edward, Washington County, New York on February 14, 1898.  A copy of his death certificate was filed with the New York State Department of Health (year 1898, certificate #5826).

Following John’s death, his widow Nellie was remarried to Burt Brown and had another daughter, Frances.  The family was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Fort Ann, Washington County, New York (pg. 76; dwelling #149; family #149; enum. June 12, 1900), as follows:
