John Griswold Edgerton was
born at Pawlet, Vermont on September 25, 1810, the son of
Simeon and Elizabeth (Griswold) Edgerton.
He was no doubt named in honor of his maternal grandfather, John
Griswold, who had died in June of the same year. John was baptized on September 14, 1827 at
the First Congregational Church of Pawlet, along with three of his siblings.
John G. Edgerton was a
farmer and resided a number of years in his hometown of Pawlet. He was married to Charlotte Wyman, daughter
of Joseph and Sally Ann (Gilbert) Wyman, natives of Putney, Vermont. John and Charlotte were probably married in
the early 1840’s, although no record of the marriage has been yet located. They had a family of five children: Lemuel B., Ann, Emma L., Alice and Marcus
Duane.
The household of John G.
Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal
Census of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont
(pg. 292; dwelling #2010; family #2212; enum. Oct. 30, 1850). John’s family was residing at this time in
the same dwelling (#2010) as his father, Simeon. The enumeration listed a large household,
including John’s father-in-law, Joseph Wyman, and a brother-in-law, Joseph
Wyman Jr. The entire household
consisted of:

Hiel Hollister’s Pawlet
for One Hundred Years (Albany, New York: J. Munsell; 1867; pg. 186) reports
that John G. Edgerton later removed from Pawlet and settled in Fort Ann, New York (in Washington County,
just across the Vermont-New York border). According to the biography of John’s
youngest son, Marcus D. Edgerton published in History of the Dakota
Territory George W. Kingsbury; 1915; Vol. IV, pp. 449-450), the family
lived in Granville (just north of Fort
Ann), where John died in 1885 and Charlotte in 1892.
The household of John
Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal
Census of Granville, Washington County, New York
(pg. 278; dwelling #233; family #244; enum. August 3, 1860), as follows:
