Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.
John H. Edgerton was born in Brookfield, Vermont
on October 20, 1820, the son of William and Sophia (Hubbard) Edgerton. John’s father died when he was eight years
old.
John was a carpenter. He was raised in Brookfield,
and later removed to the nearby village
of Northfiled, in Washington County, Vermont. On February 7, 1848, John was married at Northfield, Vermont to
Betsey S. Nye, the daughter of Solomon and Almira (Camp) Nye, of Berlin, New
York. Betsey
was born in Brookfield
on July 20, 1822. According to the
record of their marriage at Northfield (Vital
Records, Book 2A, pg. 561), John and Betsey were both “of Brookfield” at the time of their marriage.
Very little is known about the family of John H.
and Betsey (Nye) Edgerton. They had at
least one daughter, Ida May, who died at the age of three years. No other children have been discovered.
When the 1850 Federal Census was taken John H.
Edgerton and his wife, Betsey, were residing in the hotel of her father,
Solomon Nye, in Barre, Washington
County, Vermont
(pg. 219; dwelling #230; family #230; enum. August 24, 1850). John’s widowed mother, Sophia Edgerton, was
also recorded with the family. The
entire household was enumerated as follows:

John H. Edgerton died in Boston, Massachusetts
on February 3, 1864. He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery
in Northfield, Vermont, where his gravestone was
inscribed: “JOHN H. EDGERTON / DIED /
FEB. 3, 1864 / AGED 42 (sic) YRS.”
John and Betsey’s young daughter, Ida May, had previously been
interred in the small enclosed family plot near the rear of this
cemetery. John’s wife, Betsey, and his
brother, George Edgerton, were later buried there as well.
John’s widow, Betsey, was remarried on October 16,
1866 at Burlington, Vermont to Heman Carpenter, the son of
Nathaniel and Abigail (Morse) Carpenter.
Heman died in 1884, and Betsey survived another eight years, dying on
October 1, 1896. She was buried beside
her first husband in the family plot at Elmwood Cemetery. Her gravestone there was inscribed: “BETSEY / WIDOW OF / HEMAN CARPENTER / AND
/ JOHN EDGERTON / DIED / OCT. 1, 1896 / AGED 74 YRS.”
