John L. Edgerton “of Greenfield, Wisconsin” fought in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He enlisted on September 3, 1864 and served in the 43rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment (Company K).  John was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 24, 1865 (see Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers: War of the Rebellion, 1886).

John Leeds Edgerton was listed as “J. L. Edgerton” in the 1897 Standard Atlas of Monroe County, Wisconsin, (George A. Ogle & Company; Chicago, Illinois; 1897).  He was listed with a residence of 80 acres at “La Grange Township, Section 5, NE & NW”.  John’s nephew, “F. E. Edgerton” (ie. Frank E. Edgerton), was also listed in this Atlas, residing in the same township.

The household of “Leeds” Edgerton was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of La Grange Township, Monroe County, Wisconsin (pg. 105; dwelling #136; family #141; enum. June 14, 1900), as follows:

At the time of this census, John (“Leeds”) was residing adjacent to his younger brother, Frank, whose household was enumerated directly afterward on the census roll.  John’s occupation was listed as “farming”.  The enumeration for the second individual in this census is confusing.  John’s sister, Martha, was married at this time and was recorded in the household of her husband, Thomas Forrest, elsewhere in La Grange Township.  The birthdate and age recorded for “Martha” do coincide well with John’s younger, unmarried sister, Lydia, who died at La Grange Township in 1902 and is otherwise unaccounted for in the 1900 Federal Census.

John Leeds Edgerton died at La Grange Township, Wisconsin on December 5, 1904.  He was buried in the soldier’s lot at the LaGrange Cemetery in La Grange Township, Wisconsin.
