John Mills Edgerton was married three times. He was divorced from his first wife, Harriet
A. Bartling, who removed to Denver
with their only child, Elizabeth (aka “Bessie”). John subsequently settled in Chicago, where he was
married to Mary Hanlan on February 5, 1874.
The outcome of this marriage is not known, however circa 1880, John
was married for a third time to Delorah Lou Bullard, who survived him. John apparently did not have any children
with his second or third wives.
Mrs. Harriet (Bartling) Edgerton and her daughter,
Elizabeth, were recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Glasgow, Howard
County, Missouri (pg. 311; dwelling #99; family #99; enum. July 14,
1870). They were residing at this time
in the household of C. J. Stebbins, and were enumerated as follows:

Also recorded in the household was an “E.
Bartling”, aged 63, born in New
York, who was probably Harriet’s widowed mother,
Eleanor (McCabe) Bartling.
John Mills Edgerton was recorded in the 1880
Federal Census of Chicago, Cook
County, Illinois. He was residing in the household Catharine
Gibson (pg. 568; dwelling #128; family #233; enum. June 8, 1880) and was
enumerated as: “John Edgerton, age 38,
boarder, waiter, born in Ohio, both parents
born in Ohio”. Enumerated directly following John in this
household were sisters Clara and Lou Bullard – the latter, Delorah Lou
Bullard, was soon afterwards to become John’s third wife.
The household of John M. Edgerton was recorded in
the 1900 Federal Census of Lakeview, Cook
County, Illinois
(pg. 324; dwelling #158; family #263; enum. June 11, 1900) as follows:

According to the above census record, Delorah had
not had any children. John’s
occupation was listed as “Advertiser”.
The family was residing at 466
Fullerton Avenue, in the same dwelling as C. E.
and Susan Ferry.
The following obituary notice for John Mills
Edgerton was published in the The
Chicago Daily Times on January 30, 1920:
