Jonathan Edgerton was born at West Simsbury, Connecticut on October 28, 1780, the only son of Jedediah (“Jediah”) Edgerton and Sarah Bunce.  He was presumably named after his paternal grandfather.  Jonathan was raised in West Simsbury and removed along with his father and several relatives to Hamilton, Madison County, New York in the year 1803.  Jonathan and his father both purchased land in Hamilton in the year 1809.

Jonathan’s wife was named Nancy; her surname and ancestry have not yet been identified.  According to the Bible record of Jonathan’s father, Jedediah Edgerton, Jonathan and Nancy had three children:  a son, Leander, born September 2, 1808; and two daughters, Luna, born December 3, 1809, and Minerva, born January 5, 1813.

Jonathan Edgerton and his father, Jedediah, were listed as heads of households in the 1810 Federal Census of Hamilton, Madison County, New York (pg. 846), apparently residing adjacent to each other.  Both were listed as “J. Edgerton”.  Jonathan’s household was enumerated with the following individuals:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Jonathan);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Leander);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Nancy); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Luna).

According to the Bible record of his father, Jonathan Edgerton died on October 16, 1813 at Hamilton, New York.  On  September 14, 1815, George Lawton, Jediah Edgerton and Heman Bonney, “all of Hamilton County of Madison State of New York” gave a bond of administration to the Madison County Probate Court for George to serve as executor on the estate of “Jonathan Edgerton deceased”.  A subsequent inventory of the estate (dated October 9, 1815) was filed with the Probate Court on February 5, 1816 (see Madison County Probate; File #219).

Jonathan Edgerton’s widow, Nancy, was later remarried to a Mr. Adams.  On August 31, 1815, she had submitted an affidavit to the Madison County Probate Court, declining letters of administration on Jonathan’s estate, giving her name as “Nancy Adams”.  Beyond this, nothing further is known of her whereabouts.  There is also no further account of Jonathan’s two daughters, Luna and Minerva.  The only son, Leander, resided in Hamilton, where he died in 1837, leaving a wife and five children.
