Jonathan L. Edgerton was born at Hamilton, New York circa 1830, the eldest son of Leander and Ann C. (Lawton) Edgerton.  He was presumably named after his paternal grandfather.  Jonathan’s father, Leander, died when Jonathan was about seven years.  Civil war military records for Jonathan Edgerton list a middle initial of “L” – possibly for “Leander” (after his father) or “Lawton” (after his mother’s surname).

In his early maturity, Jonathan removed to Wisconsin, eventually settling in Columbia County, Wisconsin, where he was residing at the time of the 1860 Federal Census (see below).  He also apparently resided for a time in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, where his elder daughter was born in 1854.  Jonathan probably moved west together with his mother and step-father, Ann and Jeremiah Shufelt, who settled in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin.

Jonathan Edgerton was married to Fanny Morse Atwood, daughter of Lowell and Fanny (Morse) Atwood of Chester, New Hampshire..  According to census records, Fanny was born circa 1831.  Jonathan and Fanny had two daughters:  Flora Ann, born at Manitowoc, Wisconsin in March 1854; and Carrie Amanda, born at Marcellon, Wisconsin on February 26, 1863.

The household of Jonathan Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Marcellon, Columbia County, Wisconsin (pg. 437; dwelling #373; family #367; enum. June 9, 1860) as follows:

Jonathan Edgerton enlisted at Columbia County, Wisconsin on August 15, 1862, giving his name as “John Edgerton” and his residence as Marcellon, Wisconsin.  He served as a private in the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, Company C.  Jonathan died of disease at Keokuk, Iowa on September 8, 1863 and was buried at the the Keokuk National Cemetery (Section C, Site 134).

Jonathan’s widow, Fanny Edgerton, was remarried on July 4, 1867 at Buchanan Berrien County, Michigan (Co. VR 2:40:13) to William Marsh (~1814 – 1875) of Hudson, Indiana.  Fanny had three children with her second husband:  Barton W., Idaleine Belle and Clarence.  For additional reference on the family and ancestry of William Marsh please visit The Family of Lemuel Marsh and Rosanna Warner by Patra Anne Hepworth.

Following their marriage, William and Fanny resided in Hudson Township, LaPorte County, Indiana, where they were enumerated in the 1870 Federal Census (pg. 86; dwelling #64; family #64; enum. June 27, 1870).  The household was enumerated as follows:

At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, the family was residing in the town of Lafayette, Clinton County, Missouri.  Fanny was a widow again by this time and her household included herself (“Frances Marsh”) and her four younger children – that is, Carrie and the three aforementioned Marsh children.  The elder daughter, Flora Ann, had been married a few years earlier to Henry Clay Aughinbaugh and they later removed to Jackson Township, Missouri.  The younger daughter, Carrie Amanda, was married in 1882 at DeKalb County, Missouri to Thomas J. Porter.  There is currently no record of the death of Mrs. Fanny Morse (Atwood) Edgerton Marsh.
