Phebe Sayles, daughter of Ezekiel and Martha (Ross) Sayles.
Children:
Abigail Hulett, daughter of Asahel and Olive Hulett.
Rhoanna C. Robertson, daughter of Stephen and Dorothy Robertson.
Jonathan Thompson Edgerton was born in Wallingford, Vermont on February 23, 1796, the second son and third child of Daniel Edgerton Jr. and Elizabeth Fargo. He was named after his father’s stepfather, Jonathan Thompson. Jonathan was raised in Wallingford and made his living as a farmer. He was married three times. His first wife, and the mother of his nine children, was Phebe Sayles, the daughter of Ezekiel and Martha (Ross) Sayles, formerly of Smithfield, Rhode Island. Phebe was born at Smithfield on March 11, 1799. Phebe was probably related to Susan Sayles who married Jonathan’s younger brother, Harley, in 1821. Upon his maturity, Jonathan removed north with his elder brother, Daniel Edgerton III, and settled in the town of Huntington, in Chittenden County, Vermont. According to family records, Jonathan’s children were all born in the town of Lincoln, in Addison County, Vermont (just south of Chittenden County), and this is corroborated by a number of secondary sources (ie. death records of some of the children). Unfortunately, no record of the family was entered in the Vital Records at Lincoln. Census records indicate that the family resided variously in Lincoln, Starksboro and Huntington, Vermont. It would appear from the 1840 Federal Census that several of the younger children (Jonathan, Susan, Abigail and John) must have died young, since they are not included in the enumeration of the family. The household of Jonathan Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Huntington, Chittenden County, Vermont (pg. 118), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 16 and under 26” (Jonathan); 1 male “of 10 and under 16” (?); 1 male “under 10 years of age” (son Oscar); 1 female “of 16 and under 26” (wife Phebe); and, 1 female “under 10 years of age” (?). The household of Jonathan Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Starksboro, Addison County, Vermont (pg. 188), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 30 and under 40” (Jonathan); 1 male “of 10 and under 15” (son Oscar); 1 male “of 5 and under 10” (son Thompson); 1 female “of 30 and under 40” (wife Phebe); 1 female “of 5 and under 10” (daughter Laura); and, 1 female “under 5 years of age” (daughter Marjery). The household of “Johnathan” Edgerton in the 1840 Federal Census of Lincoln, Addison County, Vermont (pg. 92), with the following enumeration: 1 male “40 and under 50” (Jonathan); 1 male “20 and under 30” (son Oscar); 1 male “15 and under 20” (son Thompson); 1 male “under 5” (son William); 1 female “40 and under 50” (wife Phebe); 1 female “20 and under 30” (daughter Laura – actually aged 19); 1 female “10 and under 15” (daughter Marjery). Jonathan’s first wife, Phebe, died on September 6, 1841, presumably at Starksboro or Lincoln, Vermont. By the year 1847, Jonathan had returned to his hometown, where he resided for the remainder of his life. He was remarried on March 21, 1847 in Wallingford to Miss Abigail Hulett, the daughter of Asahel and Olive Hulett. According to the Wallingford marriage record (Miscellaneous Town Records, Book 3, pg. 61), Jonathan was “of Lincoln, Vermont” and Abigail was “of Wallingford”. The household of Jonathan Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 323; dwelling #362, family #372; enum. August 12, 1850), as follows:
The household of Jonathan’s older brother, Daniel,
was listed as the next dwelling on the census roll. The household of Jonathan Edgerton was recorded in
the 1860
Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (dwelling #227,
family #225; enum. July 9, 1860), as follows:
Mrs. Abigail (Hulett) Edgerton died at
Wallingford, Vermont on January 8, 1868, aged 69 years. She was buried at Green Hill Cemetery in
Wallingford Village. Four months later, on April 23, 1868, Jonathan was
remarried to Mrs. Rhoanna C. (Robertson) Stone, the daughter of daughter of
Stephen and Dorothy Robertson of Baltimore, Vermont. According to the marriage record (Wallingford
VR 2:1:2), Jonathan was a “farmer, aged 72, born in Wallingford, son of
Daniel and Elizabeth (Fargo) Edgerton”, and Rhoanna was “aged 60, born in
Baltimore, daughter of Stephen and Dorothy Robertson”. The marriage was noted as the third for both
Jonathan and Rhoanna. The household of Jonathan Edgerton was recorded in
the 1870
Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (dwelling #709,
family #710; enum. July 6 , 1870), as follows:
Mrs. Rhoanna (Robertson) Edgerton died on January
3, 1872, presumably at Wallingford, Vermont.
She was buried at West Hill Cemetery, in South Wallingford, Vermont,
where her gravestone
was inscribed: “RHOANNA C. / Wife of /
Jonathan T. Edgerton / DIED / Jan. 3, 1872 / AE 69 Yrs”. Jonathan Thompson Edgerton died at Wallingford,
Vermont (District 5) on November 1, 1878.
According to the death record (Wallingford VR 2:61:6), he was a
“farmer, aged 82 years, 8 months, 8 days, born in Wallingford, son of Daniel
and Betsy Edgerton”. The cause of
death was given as “paralysis”.
Jonathan was buried beside his third wife, Rhoanna, at West Hill
Cemetery. His gravestone
there was inscribed: “JONATHAN T.
EDGERTON / DIED / Nov. 1, 1878 / AE 82 Yrs”. Original Source Documents: 1820 Federal
