His mother died when Joseph was four years old, and his father, Daniel, subsequently returned to his hometown of Wallingford, where Joseph spent the remainder of his childhood. Joseph was a farmer all his life. In the 1860 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont, Joseph was recorded living in the household of his uncle, Harley, “aged 25, born VT”. Joseph E. Edgerton was married on January 27, 1868 in Wallingford to Lucy Ann Law, the daughter of Henry and Chloe (Renner) Law. She was born in Wallingford on January 9, 1850. Joseph and Lucy had two children: a son, Arthur Daniel, born in Wallingford on November 30, 1869; and a daughter, Carrie Bell, born in Wallingford on January 21, 1877.
