Joseph Kingsbury Edgerton, son of Joseph Kingsbury and Irene (Smith) Edgerton.
Prudence Doan Hubbard, daughter of George Hubbard.
Children:
Almantha Bailey
Joseph Kingsbury Edgerton II was born in 1801, presumably at Lebanon, Connecticut, where his family was then residing. He was the youngest child of Joseph Kingsbury and Irene (Smith) Edgerton and was no doubt named in memory of his elder brother of the same name who had died in infancy. Joseph’s birth was not recorded in Lebanon (nor in Franklin or Norwich). He had several elder siblings who were born in Franklin and their births were duly recorded there. Both Joseph’s parents died when he was about fifteen years old. Joseph K. Edgerton was married twice. He married first at Chatham (East Hampton), Connecticut on December 30, 1829, Prudence Doan Hubbard, daughter of George Hubbard of Haddam, Connecticut. In the marriage record (East Hampton VR 1:304), Joseph was referred to as “of Hebron” and Prudence as “of Middle Haddam”. Joseph and Prudence had one son, Earl B., born circa 1831, who died on “March 23, 1835, aged 4 years” and was buried at the Lebanon Center Cemetery in Lebanon. Mrs. Prudence (Hubbard) Edgerton died at Lebanon, Connecticut on January 16th or 17th, 1831, possibly in childbirth. Her death was recorded at the First Congregational Church of Lebanon as, “Mrs. Edgerton, died January 16, 1831, aged 24 years” (ChR 5:140). Prudence was buried at the Lebanon Center Cemetery; her gravestone there was inscribed: “Prudence D., wife of Joseph K. Edgerton, died Jan. 17, 1831, aged 24 years”. Joseph was remarried on November 29, 1832 at Lebanon, Connecticut to Mrs. Almantha (Bailey) Smith. In the marriage record (Lebanon VR 1:93), Joseph was referred to as “of Chatham” and Almantha as “of Lebanon”. The marriage was performed by the Rev. Esek Brown. It does not appear that Joseph and Almantha had any children. Joseph Kingsbury Edgerton II died at New Orleans, Louisiana on June
18, 1835. The following notice of
his death was published in the Connecticut
Gazette (New London, Connecticut) on Wednesday, July 1, 1835: “In New Orleans, of the cholera, Mr. Joseph K. Edgerton, of Lebanon, aged 34.” He was buried beside his first wife and infant son at Lebanon Center Cemetery. Joseph K. Edgerton left a Last Will and Testament, dated at Lebanon on April 19, 1836. The fact that he had made a will at such a young age indicates perhaps that he had contracted a serious illness and was aware of his imminent death. In the will, he referred to himself as “of Lebanon”, and mentions his “beloved wife Almantha B. Edgerton”, as well as a step-daughter, Mary Ann Smith, and his former father-in-law, George Hubbard. He also left bequests to a friend, Deratha E. Kelly “of New Orleans”, and to the Lebanon School District. All of the bequests were to be in effect following the death or remarriage of his widow, Almantha. No children were mentioned in the will. The will was proved at Lebanon on July 12, 1836 before Julius Clark, Judge of Probate. Joseph’s widow, Almantha, was remarried on April 1, 1838 at Colchester, Connecticut, to William Pitt Comstock. (VR 2:193) She had four children by her third husband and resided in Lebanon until her death in 1847. Mr. Comstock later removed to Benton Harbor, Michigan, where he died in 1873.
