Joshua Edgerton Jr. was born at Norwich, Connecticut on October 24, 1737, the eldest son of Joshua and Ruth (Kinsbury) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the Franklin Congregational Church on October 30, 1737.

Joshua grew up in West Farms (Norwich), and married there, on July 31, 1760, Elizabeth Hyde, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Huntington) Hyde.  Elizabeth was born at Norwich on September 19, 1739; she was descended from three of the founding families of Norwich – Hyde, Huntington and Backus.

There are few records regarding Joshua Edgerton, apart from the listing of his family in the Norwich Vital Records (VRp I:378).  According to that record, Joshua and Elizabeth had four children – one son, James, and three daughters, Deliverance, Elizabeth and Anne.  The youngest child, Anne, was born posthumously, one month after her father’s death.

Joshua Edgerton II died on May 7, 1776, presumably at Norwich.  His death was recorded in the Vital Records at Norwich (VRp I:378).  There is no record of Joshua’s burial in Norwich or Franklin; and the only probate records found for his estate are two guardianship bonds.  These two bonds, both dated April 5, 1779, appointed guardianship over the younger three children (daughters Deliverance, Elizabeth and Anne) to their uncle, Thomas Hyde Junr.  The bonds were signed at Norwich before Jabez Huntington, and witnessed by another uncle, Sims Edgerton.

Joshua’s four children were mentioned by name in the will of their grandfather, Joshua Edgerton Sr., (dated June 25, 1776) in which there were jointly left their father’s share in the estate, to be divided equally between them.

Concerning Joshua and Elizabeth’s children: the only son, James, served in the Revolution and afterward settled in New London, Connecticut, where he married Catherine Hinman and raised a large family; Deliverance married John Munsell at Norwich on February 1, 1784, after which there is no further record of her; Elizabeth reportedly died at Norwich unmarried; and Anne married Eber Hyde of Norwich and later removed to Warren, Herkimer County, New York.

There is no further definitive record of Joshua’s widow, Elizabeth.  She was probably the “Elizabeth Edgerton” listed in the 1790 Federal Census of New London County, Connecticut (, pg. 172) in Norwich with a household of “two females” (herself and one of her daughters).  According to Descendants of William Bradford (Ruth Gardiner Hall, comp.; 1951, pg. 313), Elizabeth died at Warren, New York (no date listed), where she had probably gone to live with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Anne (Edgerton) Hyde.
