Justin P. Edgerton was born April 1829 at Hardwick, New
Jersey, the second son of Charles and Jane (Utt)
Edgerton. His full name may have been
Justin Pember Edgerton, after his father’s younger brother. Justin was raised in Warren
County and resided there for the
majority of his lifetime, with the exception of a few years in neighboring Sussex County
(Newton Township). According to census records, he made his
living as a carriage maker.
Justin P. Edgerton was married December 31, 1855
at Hackettstown, New
Jersey to Elizabeth Wyckoff Sutphin, daughter of Arthur and
Fanny (Stillwell) Sutphin of Alwell, Hunterdon
County, New Jersey. Elizabeth was born April 5, 1835 at
Amwell. Her father died while she was
a teenager, and her mother, Fanny, was subsequently remarried to Andrew
Mellick.
Justin and Elizabeth (Sutphin) Edgerton had three
children: Charles, b. February 22,
1857 (married first Lizzie Allen and second Mary C. ----); Fanny Lewis, b.
August 2, 1867 (married Charles Edward Simanton); and Nellie S., b. November
28, 1873, who died in childhood.

the 1860 Federal Census of Independence, Warren County, New Jersey (pg. 647;

Justin P. Edgerton fought in the Union Army during
the Civil War. He enlisted from New Jersey and served
as a private in Company B, 31st New Jersey Infantry Regiment. He later applied for a Civil War invalid
pension on September 4, 1894. The
application was filed from the state of New Jersey. Justin’s widow, “Elizabeth W. Edgerton”,
applied for a widow’s pension on January 10, 1914. She was residing in Vermont at the time of the
application. Oscar Jeffrey was listed
as the representing attorney (see National Archives Pension Applications;
Application #1160810, Certificate #882826; and Application #1019701,
Certificate #779351).

According to the above census record, Elizabeth was the mother
of three children, two of whom were still living. Justin’s occupation was listed as “organ
cabinet maker”.
At the time of the 1910 Federal Census, Justin and
Elizabeth were residing in the household of their son, Charles Edgerton, and
his second wife, Mary, in Franklin Township, Warren County, New Jersey.
Justin P. Edgerton died on August 22, 1913
(presumbably at Warren County, New Jersey).
He was buried at the Newton Cemetery in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey.
At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Mrs.
Elizabeth (Sutphin) Edgerton was residing with her daughter, Fanny L.
(Edgerton) Simonton, in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia
County, Vermont
(pg. 191; dwelling #46; family #98; enum. January 5, 1920). She was enumerated as “Elizabeth Edgerton,
mother-in-law, aged 84, widow, b. New
Jersey, both parents b. New Jersey.”
