Justin Pember Edgerton was born in Coventry, Connecticut
in the year 1805. He was the second
son of Azel Edgerton and his first wife, Lucy Pember. Justin was raised in Coventry and resided
there his entire life. He made his
living as a farmer. Justin P. Edgerton was married on April 23, 1832
at Windham, Connecticut to Mrs. Mary (Barrows) Babcock, widow of David
Babcock. Mary was born in Mansfield,
Connecticut on January 21, 1803, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Slate)
Barrows. Mary had four children by
her first husband: one son, David
Barrows; and three daughters, Nancy Delia, Wealthy Amanda and Lora Ann. Justin and Mary Edgerton had only one child
together a son, Leonard Pember Edgerton, who was born at Coventry,
Connecticut on January 31, 1833. The household of Justin Edgerton was recorded in
the 1840 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 96),
with the following enumeration: 1 male 30 and under 40 (Justin); 1 male 10 and under 15 (stepson David); 1 male 5 and under 10 (son Leonard); 1 female 30 and under 40 (wife Mary); 2 females 15 and under 20 (stepdaughters Nancy and Wealthy); and, 1 female 10 and under 15 (stepdaughter Lora). in the 1850 Federal Census of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 310;
