Justus Edgerton was born at Hawley, Massachusetts on January 11, 1806 (not January 14, as reported in some secondary accounts).  He was the fourth child and third son of Ezekiel and Lucy (Fales) Edgerton.   Justus was raised in Hawley and made his living as a farmer.

Justus Edgerton was married twice.  He was married first on June 17, 1833 at Heath, Massachusetts to Miss Harriet Barber, daughter of John and Eunice (Pike) Barber of Heath (Heath VRp: 88).  Harriet was born at Heath, Massachusetts on May 23, 1815.  Justus and Harriet (Barbert) Edgerton had three children – two daughters, Emily Elizabeth and Martha Matilda; and one son, Levi George.  The births of the two daughters were registered in Heath (VRp:26), as was the death of the elder daughter, Emily, on March 12, 1834 (VRp:121).  The son, Levi, was born after the family removed from Massachusetts; he was raised in the household of Melvin and Sarah Brown of Hinckley, Ohio.

Circa 1835, Justus removed with most of his brothers and several cousins to Cuyahoga County, Ohio.  Justus settled in the town of Parma, just south of the present city of Cleveland.  Mrs. Harriet (Barber) Edgerton died shortly after the move west – on November 3, 1838, presumably at Parma.  She was buried at the Hinckley Ridge Cemetery in Hinckley, Medina County, Ohio.  Her gravestone there names her as “Harriet, wife of J. Edgerton”, and records her death on November 3, 1838, aged 23 years.

Justus Edgerton was remarried on January 16, 1841 at Cuyahoga County, Ohio to Mrs. Eunice Helen (Olds) Robb.  According to later family and secondary records, Eunice was born in Phelps, Ontario County, New York on May 9, 1803.  Eunice was the widow of Samuel Robb of Parma, Ohio; she had at least five children by her first husband:  James, Lovina, Madison, Byron and Nancy.  For further reference on the first marriage and children of Eunice (Olds) Robb Edgerton, see Cuyahoga County Probate, Common Pleas Probate, Docket A, Case 629, which contains the probate of Samuel Robb’s estate.

The parentage of Mrs. Eunice (Olds) Robb Edgerton has not yet been determined.  She may have been the daughter of Rufus Olds (1776 –     ), who was recorded as a head of household in the 1800 and 1810 Federal Censuses of Phelps, New York.

Justus and Eunice (Olds) Edgerton had two sons – both born at Parma, Ohio:  Irwin, born May 19, 1844; and Samuel R., born December 2, 1846.
