Leander Edgerton was born September 2, 1808 at Hamilton, New York, the only son of Jonathan and Nancy Edgerton.  Leander’s father, Jonathan, died when Leander was five years old and his mother was later remarried to a Mr. Adams.  Leander resided in Hamilton his entire life.

Leander Edgerton was married to Ann C. Lawton, daughter of George and Abigail (Hall) Lawton of Hamilton, New York, formerly of Porstmouth, Rhode Island.  Ann was born at Hamilton, New York on March 13, 1808.  Her father, George Lawton, had served as administrator on the estate of Leander’s father, Jonathan Edgerton, in 1816 (see Madison County Probate, file #219) and her elder brother, Giles Lawton, was an appraiser on the estate of Leander Edgerton in 1838 (see Madison County Probate, file #846)..  For further information on the ancestry of Ann (Lawton) Edgerton, see The Shurtleff and Lawton Families: Genealogy and History, Second Edition (William R. Shurtleff & Lawton L. Shurtleff; Lafayette, California: Pine Hill Press; 1994).  Ann’s name was erroneously reported in the George Lawton family record (pp. 76-77) as “Anthony G. Lawton”.

Leander Edgerton and his cousin of the same name were both listed as heads of household in the 1830 Federal Census of Hamilton, Madison County, New York – on the same page of the census roll (pg. 307).  Leander was recorded adjacent to his brother-in-law, Aaron D. Lawton, and his household was enumerated with the following individuals:

1 male “20 to 30”  (Leander);

1 male “under 5”  (son Jonathan); and,

1 female “20 to 30”  (wife Ann).

Leander Edgerton died at Hamilton, New York on December 12, 1837 at the age of 29 years.  According to the Madison County Probate record on his estate, Leander was survived by his wife, Ann C. Edgerton, and five children – Jonathan, Francis, Flora, “and two others whose names are unknown”.  The entire estate was valued at $500 (see Madison County Probate, file #846; also Francis A. Porter; “Some Descendants of Jonathan Edgerton”, The American Genealogist, January 1968, Vol. 44, no. 1, pp. 120-1).

The Madison County Probate record (file #846) of Leander Edgerton’s estate contains several documents of interest.  Among these are:  an application for letters of administration made to the Probate Court on January 11, 1838 by Mrs. Ann C. Edgerton; a bond of administration, dated January 10, 1838, given by Ann C. Edgerton, Heman Bonney, Jethro Bonney, William F. Bonney and Hiram Upham; an inventory of the estate, dated February 28, 1838, appraised by Giles Lawton and Charles Eldred; and an affidavit submitted to the Probate Court on January 10, 1838 by Heman Bonney and Jethro Bonney attesting to the death of Leander Edgerton “late of Hamilton deceased…on the 12 day of December last” and listing his widow and heirs at law.

Leander’s widow, Ann C. Edgerton, was remarried to Jeremiah Shufelt of Columbia County, New York and subsequently removed with him to Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin.

The household of Jeremiah Shufelt was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin (pg. 73; dwelling #162; family #164; enum. July 23, 1850), as follows:

Following the Civil War, Ann and Jeremiah removed with her younger son, Charles Francis Edgerton, to Grandview, Rhea County, Tennessee, where they were recorded in the 1870 and 1880 Federal Censuses.  By the year 1900, Jeremiah had died and Ann had removed with Charles to Monroe County, Wisconsin.  Ann was recorded in Charles’ household in the 1900 Federal Census of Byron Township, Monroe County, Wisconsin (pg. 38; dwelling #163; family #165; enum. June 20, 1900), at which time she was enumerated as “Ann C. Shoefelt, step-mother [sic], widow, aged 92 years, born March 1808 in New York, both parents born in Rhode Island.”  According to the enumeration, Ann was the mother of five children, one of whom was still living.

Mrs. Ann C. (Lawton) Edgerton Shufelt died September 30, 1903 at the home of her son, Charles, in Byron Township, Wisconsin.  She was buried on October 2, 1903 at Wood Cemetery in Byron Township, Wisconsin.  Her gravestone there bears the inscription, “ANN C. SHUFELT / 1808 – 1903”.  Ann’s son, Charles F. Edgerton, died the following year and was also buried at Wood Cemetery.

Previously, very little research has been conducted regarding the family of Leander and Ann (Lawton) Edgerton.  Of the two “unnamed” children referenced in Leander’s probate file, only one has been identified – daughter Ann, who was enumerated with her mother in the 1850 Federal Census.  There is no further account of the younger daughter, Flora.  The eldest son, Jonathan, was recorded as a head of household in the 1860 Federal Census of Marcellon, Columbia County, Wisconsin.  He was married to Fanny Morse Atwood and had two daughters, Flora Ann and Carrie Amanda.  Jonathan died of disease while serving in the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.  The younger son, Charles Francis, was married to Sarah L. Batchelder of Jo Daviess County, Illinois and resided for a time in Grandview, Tennessee before settling in Monroe County, Wisconsin, where he died in 1904.
