Lebbeus Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on May 4, 1773, the son of Asa and Eunice (Storrs) Edgerton.  His first name is found written variously as “Lebberis”, “Libbeus” and “Lebbons”.  His surname was often shortened to “Egerton”.   During his childhood, Lebbeus’ family removed from Norwich to Mansfield, Connecticut and from there to Randolph, Vermont in 1781.

Lebbeus Edgerton was married at Randolph, Vermont on January 16, 1798 to Catharine Doty, the daughter of Barnabas and Catherine (Freeman) Doty of Montpelier, Vermont and formerly Rochester, Massachusetts.  Catherine (aka. “Caty”) was born at Rochester on January 10, 1774; her first name is occasionally listed as “Caty”, apparently a diminutive.  The record of Lebbeus’ family at Randolph (VR A:34) lists only one son – Lebbeus Jr., born on March 17, 1812.

Lebbeus Edgerton was a Captain of the 11th Vermont Regiment during the War of 1812.  The following description of Lebbeus’ military service is given in Roster of Soldiers in the War of 1812 – State of Vermont (Herbert T. Johnson, Adjutant General (comp.); 1933, pg. 148):

“EGERTON, LEBBEUS, Captain.  Randolph.  Appointed Capt. 31 Inf. April 30, 1813; resigned January 11, 1814.  Volunteered to go to Plattsburgh, September, 1814, and commanded company raised in Randolph.  Also served as Adjutant in 2 Regt. (Fifield’s) Vt. Militia.”

Following the War, Lebbeus Edgerton entered politics.  He represented Randolph in the General Assemblies of 1825 and 1826 and in the Constitutional Convention of 1828.  He was elected Lieutenant Governor on the Anti-masonic ticket in 1831.  In the general election, he fell 1,860 votes short of the majority required by state law.  His ultimate election took place on October 14, 1831 before a special committee convened before the Governor.  Lebbeus Edgerton served as Lieutenant Governor from 1831 to 1835 under Gov. William Adams Palmer (1781 – 1860).  He subsequently served two terms as State Senator in 1837 and 1839.

In 1832, Lebbeus Edgerton was responsible for the construction of second the State House in Montpelier and served as its first superintendant.  Construction began the following spring and was completed by the time of the October 1836 legislative session.   The House served as the State Capital from October 1838 until January 5, 1857, when it was destroyed by fire.

The Lebbeus Edgerton house located on Main Street in Randolph, Vermont is still standing and in very well-maintained condition.  The house is a two-and-a-half story, brick town house with elaborate exterior detail and was presumably constructed circa 1801.  A detailed summary of the building’s  history was included in the Historic American Buildings Survey, Index #VT,9-RAND,1 (National Park Service, Eastern Office, Division of Design and Construction; 120 S. Third St.; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).  In May 2006, the Survey was supplemented with a number of interior and exterior photographs.

On November 8, 1832, Lebbeus Edgerton was appointed superintendant of construction of the Vermont State House at Montpelier.

Lebbeus was remarried on December 28, 1831 to Mrs. Elizabeth (Potter) Howe, widow of James Howe and daughter of Isaiah and Elizabeth (Barrett) Potter of Lebanon, New Hampshire.  Elizabeth was born in Lebanon on March 25, 1781.  The marriage record at Randolph (VR A:34) lists her as “Mrs. Elizabeth Howe of Lebanon, N.H.” and states that the marriage took place in Lebanon.  No children are recorded for Lebbeus and Elizabeth Edgerton.
