Lebbeus Edgerton II was born at Randolph, Vermont on March 17, 1812, the only child of Lebbeus Edgerton I and his first wife, Catherine Doty.  Lebbeus was raised in Randolph and Montpelier, Vermont.  His name is found written in records variously as “Lebbeus”, “Lebberis”, “Lebbons” and “Libbeus”.  His last name was often shortened to “Egerton”, and most records pertaining to his children generally use this shortened surname.

Lebbeus Edgerton’s wife was named Jane Ann Baldwyn, daughter of William and Abigail (Riggs) Baldwin, natives of Easebourne, County Sussex, England.  Jane was born at Easebourne on April 25, 1812 and baptized at the parish church there on September 30, 1812.  She was probably related to the “Miss Augusta Baldwin” and “Mr. Chas. Baldwyn” who later witnessed the baptisms of Lebbeus and Jane’s younger two daughters  (see St. John’s Episcopal Church Records; Troy, New York; Register #1, pg. 39).

For the first years of their married life, Lebbeus and Jane resided in his hometown of Randolph, Vermont.  Five children were born to them there:  four daughters, Catherine E., Maria Augusta, Jane Baldwyn and Mercy Cobbald, and one son, Lebbeus III.  Unfortunately, none of the births were registered in the Vital Records there.

The household of “Lebeus Edgerton Jr.” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 109), with the following enumeration:

3 males “30 and under 40”  (?);

1 male “20 and under 30”  (Lebbeus);

1 male “under 5 years”  (son Lebbeus);

1 female “30 and under 40”  (?);

2 females “20 and under 30”  (wife Jane and ?);

1 female “10 and under 15”  (?); and,

2 females “under 5 years”  (daughters Catherine and Maria).

Circa 1845 – 1848, Lebbeus and his family removed to Troy, Rensselaer County, New York.  They were probably joined in this migration by other family members.  About the same time, Lebbeus’ first cousin Oliver Edgerton Jr. also settled in Troy, and another first cousin, Amanda Edgerton “of Vermont”, died at Troy in October of 1845.  Her funeral was held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on October 24, 1845 (ChR 1:150).

Lebbeus and Jane Edgerton’s two youngest children – Jane Baldwyn and Mercy Cobbald – were baptized together at St. John’s Episcopal Church on August 31, 1845.  According to the baptismal record (Register #1, pg. 39), the two daughters were baptized by Rev. W. H. Walter, “by proxy of parents”.  Miss Augusta Baldwin and Mr. James Tubby were listed as the witnesses to Jane’s baptism, and Miss Augusta Baldwin and Mr. Charles Baldwyn were listed as the witnesses to Mercy’s baptism.  The baptismal register also lists the date of birth for each of the daughters.

The household of “Libbeus” Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Troy (Ward 5), Rensselaer County, New York (pg. 185; dwelling #1959; family #2794; enum. Oct. 7, 1850), as follows:

This is currently the last record of Lebbeus Edgerton Jr.  He is said to have died at Carbondale in 1880.  Mrs. Jane Ann (Baldwyn) Edgerton died at Carbondale, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvanina on April 14, 1886; a copy of her will was filed with Lackawanna County Probate (estate # 1037 and 567).  Lebbeus and Jane’s only son, Lebbeus III fought in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He was later married and resided in Pennsylvania, Nebraska and finally New York City, where he died in May 1898.  Maria Augusta was apparently the only one of the daughters to be married; her husband was Charles Henry Wilson, of Berwick, Pennsylvania.  The eldest and youngest of the daughters, Catherine and Mercy, resided together for many years in Elmira, New York (just north of the Pennsylvania border).  Catherine died there in 1892 and Mercy in 1928.  The latter was listed as a head of household in the 1900 Federal Census of Elmira, Chemung County, New York.  There is currently no further record of the second-youngest daughter, Jane.
