“Lebbeus Egerton, Jr.” of Pennsylvania served in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He enlisted on March 7, 1864 and was mustered into the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery Regiment (Company L.) on July 7, 1864.  He was subsequently promoted to Full First Lieutenant and transferred to the 10th United States Colored Troops (Company A).  Lebbeus was mustered out of service on April 26, 1865 (see History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865, 1870).

 

Lebbeus Egerton later applied for a Civil War Invalid Pension.  The application was filed from the state of Nebraska and cited Lebbeus’ service in the 3rd Pennsylvania Artillery (Company L) and in the 10th United States Colored Troops.  Lebbeus’ widow, “Sallie Egerton”, later applied for a Widow’s pension; she was residing in Pennsylvania at the time of the application.  (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #1203920; and Application #678669).

 

At the time of the 1870 Federal Census, Lebbeus Edgerton and his wife were recorded in the boarding house of Leland Crandall in Brooklyn, (Ward 6), Kings County, New York (pg. 190; dwelling #706; family #1114; enum. July 30, 1870).  They were enumerated as follows:

Lebbeus Edgerton died on May 30, 1898 at Ambrose Park in Brooklyn, New York.  According to his death certificate (New York City Death Certificates, #8468), Lebbeus was a broker aged 60, married, born in Vermont, the son of Lebbeus and Jane Egerton.  The following obituary notice was published in the The Brooklyn Daily Eagle on Monday, May 30, 1898:

 

“Lebbens Edgerton, 60 years old, of 115 West Twenty-third street, Manhattan, employed by Frederick Jenkins in the real estate office at Ambrose Park, was taken suddenly ill this morning at 10 o’clock and died before the Ambulance Surgeon McCullom.  Heart disease was the cause.”

 

Lebbeus’ widow, Sallie, was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Elmira City (Ward 4), Chemung County, New York.  She was residing at the time as a “boarder” in the household of Charles Pratt (pg. 184; dwelling #75; family #84; enum. June 5-6, 1900), and was enumerated as “Sallie Edgerton, widow, aged 54, born June 1845 in Pennsylvania (father born in New York, mother born in Pennsylvania).  According to this census enumeration, Sallie had not had any children.  Her residence was listed as “318 Williams St.”
